Bang Ca village festival, home to two national intangible cultural heritages

TPO - The Bang Ca Village Festival in 2025 was held for the first time on a city scale, attracting a large number of people and tourists to attend. On February 28, at the Thanh Y Dao Cultural Reserve, Bang Ca Commune, Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province, the 2025 Bang Ca Village Festival took place.

This is a traditional festival of the Dao Thanh Y people in particular and the ethnic community of Ha Long city in general.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Dung, Chairman of the People's Committee of Bang Ca commune, shared that every year on this day, the village elders, village chiefs and people, no matter where they are studying or working in any part of the country, all remember the village festival.

The village festival is held with the meaning of praying to heaven, the land god, the village guardian spirit to bless the people with favorable weather, prosperous business, and good crops in the new year.

The festival takes place on 5 days a year (including: February 1st, April 1st, July 1st, October 1st and December 20th every year), in which February 28th (ie February 1st of the lunar calendar) is the main New Year's ceremony.

Within the framework of the Village Festival, there are rituals: A ceremony to pray to heaven, the local god, the village guardian spirit to bless the villagers with favorable weather and good crops in the new year; A ceremony to pray for the clans and villagers to be happy, healthy, united, and live happily and harmoniously; A ceremony to pray for the Dao Thanh Y people to plant forests and fields so that wild animals do not destroy them, for everyone to have a prosperous business, for granaries to be full of rice, and for cows, pigs, and chickens to be full of pens.

Within the framework of the village festival, some traditional festivals typical of the Dao Thanh Y and Tay people are also reenacted, such as the New Rice Celebration, the Coming of Age Ceremony, and the Harvest Prayer Ceremony....

In addition, the festival also has cultural exchanges between ethnic groups from localities in Ha Long city such as Dan Chu, Quang La, Tan Dan, Ky Thuong...

Coming to the festival, people and tourists can immerse themselves in a cultural space imbued with the identity of ethnic minorities in Ha Long city.

"Very interesting and colorful. This is the first time I have been able to participate in a festival full of national identity of the people of Ha Long city. I was able to participate in embroidering traditional costumes, wrapping banh chung and enjoying local products," the group of female tourists shared.

Ms. Ly Thi Ha, a Dao person in Bang Ca commune, said that Bang Ca village festival is the biggest and most important festival of the Thanh Y Dao people. On this day, the elders in the village bring scarves and shirts to the cultural house to embroider. "My fellow villagers and I are very honored, excited and try to preserve the ethnic cultural identity, especially preserving costumes, participating in the seniority festivals and village festivals," Ms. Ha shared.

In addition to enjoying traditional rituals of ethnic minorities, visitors can also participate in folk activities and games such as bamboo jumping, throwing balls, walking on monkey bridges...

With unique cultural and religious values, the Dao Thanh Y's Coming of Age Ceremony and the Tay's New Rice Celebration in Ha Long City and some places in Quang Ninh have been recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Son, Vice Chairman of Ha Long City People's Committee, said that the city determined to have more tourism products. "With the newly recognized intangible cultural heritage, in 2026 we will upgrade to extend the time for tourists to come to Ha Long and will build Bang Ca village festival to be a truly big festival of ethnic groups in the northern region of the city to attract tourists, especially international visitors," Mr. Son shared.
