VAIC 2025 is the first artificial intelligence competition for high school students in Vietnam, initiated and organized by the community of Vietnamese scientists and AI experts around the world. The competition was officially launched on July 20, with the cooperation between aidemyX Company, the Institute for Artificial Intelligence Research and Application (AI4LIFE) - Hanoi University of Science and Technology, RIVA Institute and the Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics.
The winning team received a prize worth 20 million VND. Each team member was also awarded a scholarship worth 5,000 USD to participate in the AI-xtanh program of AidemyX Company, in which they will be directly guided by Professor Thai Tra My, IEEE Academician and AI professor at the University of Florida (USA).
According to the group of students, this is the third time they have won an award for artificial intelligence, after winning the Silver Prize twice at the 5th Central Highlands Informatics Olympiad in 2024 and at the AI competition organized by Hanoi National University.
Practical problems and teamwork strategies
The VAIC 2025 competition, although it was the first year of organization, attracted the participation of 137 contestants from 31 high schools and middle schools in 9 provinces and cities. After the preliminary round, 104 best contestants from 31 teams entered the final round which took place from September 19 to 21. The champion team surpassed more than 30 competing teams to win.
The highlight of the competition is that the questions are designed around practical problems and real data. The main goal of the competition is to encourage students to develop critical thinking, creativity and teamwork skills with AI models to solve real-world problems. The competition does not require students to be professional programmers, but focuses on the ability to think of solutions and collaborate with technology.
According to the team members, the exam focuses on two topics that are of great interest today: applying AI in healthcare and using AI to detect plagiarism.
To prepare for the exam, the team spent about two months researching all topics related to artificial intelligence. Each member of the team had a clear division of labor: Chi Anh focused on studying theory, Thuan Hieu specialized in language processing, and Dang Huy and Tung Lam researched cancer cell image processing. The good coordination within the team was the decisive factor in helping them complete the exam in just one day. In addition to studying in class, the students also searched for documents online and participated in online courses to supplement their knowledge.
Other awards
In addition to the championship trophy for Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, the Organizing Committee also awarded two Gold Medals to student teams from the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences (Hanoi National University). Each team received a prize worth 10 million VND.
The contest also awarded 5 Silver Medals (worth 5 million VND/team) and 8 Bronze Medals (worth 3 million VND/team) to excellent teams.
In addition to the main competitions, VAIC 2025 also organizes many inspiring sideline activities, including specialized workshops and sharing sessions from Vietnamese AI experts working at IBM and Meta, as well as tours to pioneering businesses in the field of AI in Vietnam. These activities not only help students better understand the practical applications of technology but also create opportunities to connect with the community and inspire career passion for the younger generation.
