Two Vietnamese professors recognized as academicians of the World Academy of Sciences

DNVN - On the morning of October 2, 2025 (local time), two leading Vietnamese scientists were officially recognized as Academicians of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). The ceremony to receive new members took place at the 17th TWAS Conference, held from September 29 to October 2, 2025 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The two Vietnamese scientists honored are Major General, Professor, Doctor of Science, People's Physician Nguyen The Hoang, former Deputy Director of 108 Military Central Hospital and Professor, Doctor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City National University. This election decision officially takes effect from January 1, 2025.
At this prestigious forum, Professor, Doctor of Science Quarraisha Abdool Karim, President of TWAS, awarded the official Academician recognition certificates to two Vietnamese scientists, witnessed by more than 300 delegates who are scientists from all over the world .
Professor Nguyen The Hoang (born in 1965 in Ha Tinh ) is a leading expert in orthopedic trauma and microsurgery. He graduated as a General Practitioner from the Military Medical Academy (1987) and defended his Doctorate in Medicine at the University of Munich, Germany (1997). He was appointed Associate Professor in 2006 and was awarded the title of Professor in 2018. His main research areas focus on neovascularization and cell culture, microsurgical free tissue flap transfer, treatment of complex congenital limb defects and organ transplantation. He is the main author of more than 100 domestic and international research works. In 2012, he received the prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Science Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of the German Academy of Sciences.
Professor Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai (born in 1974 in Quang Ngai) is a typical female scientist. She graduated with a degree in Chemistry from Ho Chi Minh City University of Science (now the University of Natural Sciences, VNU-HCM). She was recognized as an Associate Professor in 2014 and a Professor in 2020. In her research career, she focused on drug discovery from Vietnamese medicinal herbs. Her research team has applied research and completed two products to support the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer and arthritis from domestic medicinal herbs. She has published more than 80 articles in prestigious international scientific journals. In 2021, she was honored to receive the Kovalevskaia Award - a prestigious award honoring female scientists in the field of natural sciences.
TWAS (World Academy of Sciences) is an international non-governmental organization under UNESCO. TWAS was founded in 1983 and brings together more than 1,400 outstanding scientists from over 100 countries. The election of TWAS Academicians is held to recognize scientific progress in developing countries. In the 2025 election, TWAS elected 74 new academicians, the largest number of elected academicians in the history of the organization. The total number of TWAS members has now increased to 1,444. Vietnam, along with Cuba, Egypt and the United States, each have 2 newly recognized academicians.
