Fear of heart attack, stroke: A familiar vaccine can save you!

Heart attack and stroke are two of the most dangerous cardiovascular events, often occurring suddenly and leaving serious consequences, even life-threatening.

It is also the leading cause of death and disability globally, so finding effective prevention measures is a top priority.

Now, a large-scale global study presented on August 30 at the annual meeting of the European Society of Cardiology in Madrid, Spain - the world's largest cardiovascular conference - has confirmed that a commonly used vaccine can do just that: significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, according to the medical news site News Medical.

A global systematic review was conducted using three scientific literature databases, including 19 studies, to assess the impact of zoster vaccine on cardiovascular events.

This is the world's first global systematic review and meta-analysis.

Results show that the shingles vaccine significantly reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Specifically as follows:

In people 18 years of age and older: Getting the shingles vaccine reduces the risk of stroke or heart attack by 18 to 21%.

For people 50 years of age and older, the decrease is 16 - 21%, according to News Medical.

Notably, all shingles vaccines studied were shown to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

We reviewed the available evidence and found that shingles vaccination reduces the risk of cardiovascular events – such as heart attack or stroke, the researchers said.

The shingles vaccine is usually given as a single injection in two doses, several months apart.

Shingles and the surprising link to stroke you can't ignore

Shingles, a common disease that affects millions of people worldwide, causes a painful rash that can lead to serious problems such as deafness, chronic pain and blindness. It is especially likely to cause serious problems in older people.

Most countries typically only recommend the vaccine for the elderly or immunocompromised adults, but findings suggest it may have cardiovascular protective effects in people aged 18 and older.

Professor Bryan Williams, Director of Science and Health at the British Heart Foundation, who was not involved in the research, welcomed the findings but said further research was needed.

There is a lot of interest in studies showing that the shingles vaccine may reduce the risk of cardiovascular events, he said.

Shingles can cause inflammation in the body, and is a culprit in many cardiovascular diseases, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes. By preventing shingles, vaccination can provide protection.

The UK National Health Service initially recommended the shingles vaccine for people over 50 with severely weakened immune systems. However, they are now extending the recommendation to include people aged 18 to 49 with severely weakened immune systems.
