After 7 years of internship, Dakota Carter (American nationality) became an official employee for the Rail Splitter wind farm in Delavan, Illinois, USA.
He had been fascinated by the beauty of the turbines before. He admired the work even more when he learned that the turbines provided electricity to more than 35,000 local homes.
Wind turbine technicians are currently being recruited with salaries estimated to be up to billions of dong a year (Photo: Freepik).
In this profession, Carter said, technicians always have to face many difficulties and strict demands.
Initially, technicians are often assigned to scheduled maintenance and cleaning of equipment. Gradually, they will take on troubleshooting and repairing turbines and managing the crew.
The biggest challenge for the workers is the weather conditions. Turbine technicians have to work at height, regardless of cold or hot weather. Therefore, this job requires technicians to have good physical condition.
Technicians working for a company that operates multiple wind farms may have to travel from one location to another for long periods of time.
In return for the hardships and challenges, the profession brings Carter a good income.
Harry Willats, executive consultant at Darwin Recruitment, which specializes in the wind power sector, shares that the starting salary for a technician is usually between $20 and $25 per hour (equivalent to VND 509-636,000). More experienced technicians can earn closer to $50 an hour (about VND 1.2 million). Accordingly, the income of human resources in this profession ranges from 61,770-80,100/year (ie VND 1.5-2 billion).

Typically, turbine technician candidates complete a one-year electrical certificate program at a technical or community college, Willats said. They then apply to companies to learn the job. To become full-time employees, they must complete courses from the Global Wind Organization in basic safety, first aid and sea survival.
In the US, in addition to nursing, wind turbine technicians are currently in high demand. The job site Indeed recently released data showing that the demand for wind turbine technicians has increased by 30% by 2023. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects about 1,800 job openings each year over the next decade.
Forecasts for labor groups show that by 2027 this profession will need about 240,000 employees across Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Japan, Kenya, South Korea and the United States.
In fact, these countries want to build onshore and offshore wind farms quickly so they can meet renewable energy targets and mitigate the climate crisis.
