German Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced on December 15 that the government has decided to extend border controls with the Czech Republic, Poland and Switzerland for another three months, until March 15, 2024.

According to Minister Faeser, the German Federal Police will continue to flexibly implement all measures of both fixed and mobile police forces to enforce the above decision.

December 15 is the final date for the previous extension of controls, announced by Faeser on December 4. Previous extensions, which typically lasted 10 or 20 days, have been criticized by German politicians, including Interior Minister Armin Schuster of the state of Sachen, who last week called for the border controls to be extended for another six months.

The German Federal Interior Ministry stressed that border control measures are effective and should be extended.

Since the measures were introduced, as of December 10, Berlin has recorded 2,950 cases of illegal entry at the border with the Czech Republic, 3,500 cases at the border with Poland and 3,450 cases at the border with Switzerland.

In addition, in November, the number of illegal entries into Germany fell by 60% compared to October, down to around 7,300 from around 20,000.

Minister Faeser has previously stated many times that border controls would no longer be necessary if the European Union (EU) reformed asylum laws and external border policies more effectively.
