Meta wants to make social networks full of AI-generated virtual people

(CLO) Meta is turning social networks into places full of virtual characters created by AI. Instead of just connecting with friends, real users will soon be able to chat with virtual people on Facebook and Instagram.

Connor Hayes, Vice President of Product for Next-Generation AI at Meta, shares the company's vision: "We want these AIs to exist as normal users on the platform, with their own bios, avatars, and the ability to create their own content. This means you can create an AI version of yourself, a virtual friend, or even a virtual celebrity to interact with."

Interacting with AI characters is expected to bring new experiences. AI characters can create a variety of content, from images, videos to creative articles, enriching the online world . Moreover, users can customize AI characters according to their preferences, creating unique experiences.

The push comes as social media companies race to roll out next-generation AI technologies into their products as a way to attract new users and more content to their platforms.

In September, Snapchat rolled out next-generation AI tools to help online creators, who earn money from posting content online, design 3D characters for its augmented reality experiences. It has seen the number of users viewing its AI lenses grow more than 50% year-over-year.

ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, is testing a suite of products called Symphony that will allow brands and creators to use AI for advertising. This includes creating videos for products using text prompts, AI-generated avatars, and translating content into different languages.

However, experts warn that major risks could arise if these figures are "weaponized" to spread misinformation.

“Without strong safeguards, platforms risk amplifying misinformation through AI-driven accounts,” said Becky Owen, global director of marketing and innovation at creative agency Billion Dollar Boy and former head of Meta’s creator innovation team.

To address concerns, Meta's rules stipulate that AI-generated content must be clearly labeled on its platforms.

Owen notes that while AI characters could be an “innovative new entertainment format,” there is a risk they could flood platforms with low-quality content, undermining the craft of creators as well as undermining user trust.

“Unlike their creators, these AI characters do not have life experiences, emotions, or the same ability to generate empathy,” she added.
