Onana moved to the Turkish Super League after two turbulent years at Old Trafford. Once expected to be a safe haven with an initial transfer fee of £43.8 million from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023, the Cameroonian goalkeeper has repeatedly disappointed.
He often makes mistakes in big matches, leaving the image of a "disaster" goalkeeper in the eyes of Red Devils fans.
At the beginning of the 2025/26 season, Onana continued to be the focus of criticism when he made a serious mistake in MU's shocking defeat to the lower-ranked team Grimsby in the second round of the Carabao Cup. That disastrous play was considered the "last straw", causing him to lose the number 1 position to Altay Bayindir.
According to ESPN, this loan contract does not include a fee or a buyout clause. That means Onana will return to MU next summer, the Manchester team will not have to bear any salary during his time playing in Türkiye.
Before leaving, Onana had intended to stay and fight for a starting position at Old Trafford. But the arrival of young goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Antwerp on the final day of the transfer window made him change his mind, choosing to leave to save his career.
In a brief statement, MU wrote: "Goalkeeper Andre Onana has joined Trabzonspor on loan for the 2025/26 season. The deal was completed before the Turkish transfer window closed on September 12. We wish him good luck."
Currently, Onana said he is very excited about his debut for the new team:
“I am very happy. I am starting a new adventure. I am really excited. Feeling the love from the people around me means a lot to me. I want to get to work as soon as possible and bring joy to them on the field."
Onana left MU after 102 appearances and the 2024 FA Cup title. However, the number of serious mistakes was as many as the shining moments, making him one of the most controversial deals in the club's history.
