Rain, high tides, and subsidence are all increasing, causing concern that Ho Chi Minh City will be severely flooded in the next 3 months.

Ho Chi Minh City is in the peak of the rainy season, and the high tide season has also begun, along with increased subsidence, making the risk of upcoming flooding more severe.

The Southern Hydrometeorological Station said that in the next 3 months, the highest water level of the month at stations in the Saigon River basin will rise rapidly. The water level will be approximately equal to or 15-30cm higher than the average level of the same period in many years.

This is also the time when high tides in Ho Chi Minh City reach their peak, causing flooding on many roads along rivers and canals.

The highest peak tide level in the next 3 months is likely to appear in November, at a level 5-15cm above alert level 3 (1.65m), which could reach 1.8m. September and October will also have quite high tides.

From September to November, total rainfall is more concentrated in September and October. Due to heavy rain, during this period, the discharge of water from Dau Tieng Lake and upstream reservoirs will cause the water levels of the rivers to increase.

Rain, flood discharge combined with high tides affected by the Northeast monsoon will make flooding worse.

Another factor that will add up to make flooding in Ho Chi Minh City worse is subsidence.

According to research results, currently Ho Chi Minh City has an average subsidence rate of about 2-5cm per year.

In areas with weak geological foundations, concentrated commercial buildings can have a subsidence rate of up to 7-8cm per year. The rate of ground subsidence is twice as high as sea level rise (about 1cm per year).

The subsidence trend occurs in areas along the Saigon River, from Saigon Bridge to Ba Son Bridge and the southern area of the city.

Thus, land subsidence and rising water levels make flooding in Ho Chi Minh City in the near future very worrying.

Many anti-flood and tide-prevention projects are of interest.

In Ho Chi Minh City, there are currently a number of seriously flooded areas that are being addressed by city leaders.

Recently, the Office of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just announced the conclusion of Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Xuan Cuong after a meeting to listen to reports on the current status, planning, and investment plan to solve drainage problems in the Thu Duc market area (Thu Duc ward).

Based on the content of the flood prevention and wastewater treatment project in Ho Chi Minh City for the period 2020 - 2045 and the flood prevention and wastewater treatment plan for the period 2020 - 2030, the Department of Construction urgently summarized, evaluated and completed the report to serve the 12th City Party Congress.

At the same time, continue to review and advise the City People's Committee to direct and handle flood prevention contents and develop new projects and plans (with draft) for the 2026 - 2030 and 2030 - 2045 periods, suitable for the whole city in the new situation after the merger.

The flooded area of Lang Hoa Park (old Go Vap district) was cleared last May with a capital of more than 353 billion VND.

At the same time, the city is also preparing to invest in projects including: renovating the drainage system of Thao Dien - Quoc Huong - Xuan Thuy - Nguyen Van Huong streets; dredging the drainage axis of Ba Lon canal; dredging and renovating Bau Trau canal; renovating the drainage system of Bach Dang street; renovating the drainage system of National Highway 1 and building the drainage system of Phan Anh street.

The tidal flooding problem will be solved in District 7, Nha Be District and the old Binh Chanh District by completing the tidal flooding problem project taking into account climate change (phase 1 - 10,000 billion tidal prevention project).

Solving tidal flooding for Nguyen Van Huong Street, Thu Duc City through completing the left bank project of Saigon River (from Cau Ngang Canal to Thu Thiem new urban area).
