According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the airstrike was conducted on the evening of February 7 local time, targeting a car identified as carrying Wisam Mohammed Saber al-Saedi, commander of the pro-Iranian Kataib Hezbollah militia, in Baghdad, Iraq. There was no indication that the raid caused any civilian casualties.

An unnamed US official said Washington did not inform Iraq in advance about the raid due to security concerns, but stressed that US officials had made clear the US would respond to attacks on its forces with drone strikes.

Earlier, US officials said they believed an armed group called the Islamic Resistance in Iraq was behind the drone attack on a US airbase in Jordan that killed three soldiers and injured more than 40 others.

This is the first time US soldiers have been killed in the region since the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza broke out last October. Previously, US bases in Syria and Iraq were also hit by gunfire.

Last weekend, the US attacked more than 80 targets of pro-Iran armed groups in Iraq and Syria. Washington declared that this was only the beginning of a retaliatory campaign.
