As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, the demand for cakes and candies, especially moon cakes, increases dramatically. Therefore, the number of moon cake production, processing and trading establishments has increased rapidly. However, in addition to reputable production and trading establishments with safe products, there are still some organizations and individuals secretly bringing to the market some types of smuggled cakes and candies of unknown origin. This makes it difficult for consumers to distinguish between quality products and floating goods that pose a risk of food safety.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Tam, resident of Rach Gia ward, shared: “My two children love to eat moon cakes. Every year, about a month before the Mid-Autumn Festival, my family starts buying cakes to eat. However, recently, I have heard a lot of information about smuggled cakes of unknown origin being discovered, I am worried. This year, I only choose to buy cakes from reputable brands, stores or in supermarkets. Although the price is higher than the market price, I feel more secure.”
To strengthen food safety control during the Mid-Autumn Festival, from September 16 to September 19, the Provincial Department of Food Safety and Hygiene established an inspection team to inspect food service establishments and establishments with collective kitchens in Binh An commune and Phu Quoc special zone. Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Food Safety and Hygiene Dang Van Binh said: "In addition to checking the administrative and legal records of the establishments, the team focuses on checking food safety conditions such as: Facility conditions, equipment, tools; food processing and preservation processes; origin of raw materials, food additives; 3-step food inspection regime, food sample storage. The use of clean water that meets technical standards for food processing...".
The People's Committee of Rach Gia Ward established an interdisciplinary team to inspect food safety during the Mid-Autumn Festival. In addition to moon cake production and trading establishments, the team inspected food production, processing and trading establishments, catering service businesses, street food businesses, ready-to-eat meal suppliers and related organizations and individuals during the peak period of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Mr. Ngo Quoc Khai - Deputy Head of the Department of Culture and Society of Rach Gia Ward, head of the inspection team, said: "Through the inspection, in general, food production, business and processing establishments; food service establishments have done a good job of ensuring food safety and hygiene; complied with legal procedures; food processing ingredients have clear origin and source, production time, usage time and products have an expiry date... However, there are still some establishments that have not ensured legal procedures; food processing and preparation places have not ensured hygiene, food processing tools have not been arranged neatly... For establishments that violate the regulations, the team will propagate, remind and handle them according to regulations".
The owner of a mooncake shop on 3/2 Street, Rach Gia Ward, Mr. Vu Van Hoa said: “I sell Kinh Do brand mooncakes and Tan Hue Vien pia cakes with clear origin. When importing goods, I pay attention to checking the expiry date, packaging and product preservation. Staff regularly clean the cake storage area and the cake display cabinets are cleaned and sanitized daily to ensure the health and safety of consumers.”
To ensure the health of themselves and their families, Mr. Dang Van Binh recommends that consumers pay attention to the label when choosing products. The product must have a clear origin, including: Name of the manufacturer, address of the place of production, instructions for use and preservation; the product has a production date and an expiration date. It is best to use a new product. The product must not be crushed, deformed, the packaging must not be torn, have no unusual color, or have a strange smell...
