US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US will announce a “significant” aid package for farmers next week, particularly soybean growers, as they deal with the fallout from President Donald Trump’s trade conflicts.

For weeks, officials and the public have worried about a major blow to farmers — a key part of Mr. Trump’s political base — as exports to China plummeted as the country imposed retaliatory tariffs in response to U.S. duties.

Bessent said people should expect to hear about significant aid for farmers, especially soybean growers. The Wall Street Journal also reported that President Donald Trump is considering a $10 billion or more aid package for American farmers as trade tensions begin to take their toll. The newspaper said the Trump administration is considering using revenue from the president’s tariffs to fund much of the package, with the money likely to be distributed in the coming months.

Asked about the issue, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said Trump and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins have been in regular contact about the needs of farmers, who were instrumental in the president's election victory. She told AFP that the president has made clear his intention to use tax revenue to support the agricultural sector, but has not yet made a final decision on the details of the plan.

American farmers are caught in the crossfire as the US and China impose retaliatory tariffs on each other's goods. On October 1, 2025, Mr. Trump said he planned to urge Chinese President Xi Jinping to buy American soybeans when the two leaders meet in the coming weeks. The leaders of the world's two largest economies are expected to talk in about four weeks, on the sidelines of the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea.

The American Soybean Association warned in August 2025 that China’s retaliatory tariffs were preventing US farmers from accessing their largest export market in the 2025 harvest – as China is the world’s top soybean buyer. However, China’s reciprocal tariffs, introduced after Trump imposed additional tariffs on Chinese goods, have reduced sales to the country. Instead, Chinese buyers are increasingly relying on other exporters such as Brazil and Argentina.

Jonathan Driver, a soybean farmer in Arkansas, said no one wants to buy his crop. He said farmers are still selling their crops, but many are selling at a loss. He worries that this will push some farmers into bankruptcy while costs continue to rise.
