Automakers Tesla and General Motors are leading the U.S. auto industry this year with record domestic sales of all-electric vehicles, as consumers rush to buy electric vehicles before federal incentives of up to $7,500 per purchase end in September.

New data provided to CNBC by Motor Intelligence shows that US electric vehicle sales, excluding hybrids, surpassed 1 million units in the first nine months of the year and hit a new record in the third quarter with more than 438,000 vehicles sold, accounting for 10.5% of the market share during the period.

That record market share is up from 7.4% in the second quarter and 7.6% in the first three months of the year, according to Motor Intelligence. Sales of all-electric models are estimated to reach 1.3 million in 2024, accounting for about 8% of the market.

US market leader Tesla, which does not report sales by region, is estimated to retain its lead with a 43.1% market share by September 2025, down from 49% at the end of last year, as rivals continue to roll out new electric models.

GM, which sells the most electric vehicles in the US, has made significant strides this year. Motor Intelligence reports that the Detroit-based automaker increased its market share from 8.7% at the start of the year to 13.8% through the third quarter, surpassing Hyundai Motor, which includes Kia, at 8.6% by September 2025.

The sales data comes two days after GM estimated it would lead the US auto industry in EV market share growth by far through 2025, with the lowest incentives of any major automaker. GM sold 144,668 EVs through September 2025, a figure that represents just 6.8% of its total US sales.

Following Tesla, GM and Hyundai, Motor Intelligence data shows Ford Motor's electric vehicle market share reached 6.6% as of the end of the third quarter, followed by Volkswagen at 5.4%; Honda Motor at 4.6%; and BMW at 3.6%.

Despite rising sales quarter after quarter this year, EV startups like Rivian Automotive and Lucid Group still have small market shares, with Lucid still under 1%, while Rivian is expected to reach 3% by September 2025.

Major automakers reported third-quarter earnings this week, with electric vehicle sales a key driver. The surge in purchases came before federal incentives for the vehicles were set to end under the Trump administration’s “Big and the Beautiful Act.”

Analysts and industry executives believe the end of the incentives will create a boom-bust cycle for electric vehicle sales in the U.S. Ford CEO Jim Farley said on September 30 that he “wouldn’t be surprised” if electric vehicle sales fell from a market share of about 10% to 12% in September 2025 to 5% after the incentives ended.

The end of EV credits in the US comes as the country continues to lag behind other major automakers in the adoption of zero-emission vehicles. The International Energy Agency reports that China continued to lead the world in EV adoption last year, with sales of 6.4 million all-electric vehicles, excluding hybrids, followed by Europe with 2.2 million.
