Launching Vietgap digital monitoring for Northwestern fruit trees

The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has officially launched the project "Digital monitoring of VietGAP compliance in the fruit value chain of smallholder farmers in the Northwest for high-quality domestic markets and potential export markets". The project is funded by the Australian Government, with a total value of 2.1 million Australian dollars (equivalent to about 35 billion VND). Son La's fruit growing area reaches nearly 79,000 hectares, but the rate of products certified by VietGAP, GlobalGAP and with growing area codes is still limited.

Mr. Pham Ngoc Mau - Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) said that the project was deployed to implement the Crop Development Strategy to 2030, vision 2050, the Project on developing key fruit trees to 2025 and 2030 and directly support the Planning of Son La province for the period 2021-2030.

By applying digital monitoring tools in the value chain of mango, longan, and dragon fruit - local fruit products with advantages, the project will contribute to improving product quality, reducing post-harvest losses, enhancing traceability, meeting modern market and export standards, promoting sustainable links between farmers, cooperatives, businesses and markets, and at the same time creating conditions to increase income and improve livelihoods for farmers in Son La and the Northwest region.

Ms. Monica Finlayson - Agricultural Counselor, Australian Embassy highlighted the importance of this cooperation project between the two countries. Through the project, the Australian Government will support Vietnamese farmers to have more access to digital tools, promote production according to VietGAP standards and expand export markets. This is also an opportunity for both sides to share experiences in the agricultural sector.

“Successful partnerships require the participation of many parties, from the Government, agencies, local management units to small farmers,” Ms. Monica emphasized.
