Handsome male student graduated as valedictorian of university and was runner-up in student competition.

Bui The Trung (BCSE2021 class, Advanced Science and Engineering) excelled in becoming the valedictorian of the first graduating class of the Computer Science and Engineering major at Vietnam-Japan University - Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

After 4 years of study, Bui The Trung achieved a cumulative average of 3.61/4 and became valedictorian of his major.

“I was very happy but I didn’t think I could become valedictorian in a class with many talented and good students. The most important thing to me is not the title, but the process of growing up and becoming more confident,” the student from Hai Phong shared.

The environment of Vietnam-Japan University opens up opportunities for Trung to satisfy his curiosity and love of discovery, especially learning new fields of computer science , artificial intelligence (AI) and applications of technology in life.

At Vietnam Japan University, students must pass compulsory and elective courses. For elective courses, students can register to “exceed” credits without paying extra tuition.

Therefore, Trung took the opportunity to register for additional courses such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Human-Computer Interaction... to have more opportunities for scores, from which to choose to calculate graduation scores. In the transcript, the male student graduated with 161 credits, 9 credits more than required.

“Through elective courses, I not only have the freedom to explore my passion, but also learn how to solve problems in multiple dimensions, think more logically and creatively. Therefore, I try to arrange to register for as many courses as possible,” Trung said.

Talking about his learning method, Trung said that in class, he concentrates on listening to lectures, and at home he spends a lot of time practicing and applying knowledge. With the homework assigned by the teachers, Trung not only completes it but also struggles to find many different ways to handle it.

In addition to impressive academic results, the male student also won second prize in the "Student Scientific Research" award for the 2023-2024 school year; won an encouragement scholarship and achieved the title of "5 Good Students" at the school level; Outstanding Young Face at the grassroots level in 2023.

However, during his time in college, Trung also encountered challenges and even mistakes.

“During the Covid-19 period, I had to study online at home. In the Calculus 2 course of the second semester of my first year, I turned on my computer to study but actually slept in and when it came to the exam, I didn’t know a word. With a D, I had to study to improve and learned a lesson for myself that at university, I have to be more proactive and self-disciplined. Being away from my parents, no one can tutor me and self-discipline is more important than ever. After that, I didn’t miss any classes in all subjects and my results gradually improved,” Trung said.

Trung believes that to get the results today, he is lucky to study in the environment of Vietnam - Japan University and receive support and care from teachers and friends.

“I remember one time because I forgot to submit important documents to register for a course, I thought I would lose the opportunity to study. But when I arrived at the office, the staff on duty not only helped me check carefully, but also guided me to supplement the detailed documents and connected with the lecturer to ensure my opportunity. It was a small incident but it made me very touched and grateful,” Trung shared, adding that those things urged him to be more responsible for himself and the community.

During his studies, Trung was impressed by the fact that teachers always took time after class to chat, guide research or share experiences with students.

He also participated in research with teachers many times and was encouraged to attend international scientific conferences and specialized seminars. “Thanks to that, I can always update my knowledge, broaden my thinking and be more determined to follow the path of research,” Trung shared.

Trung always remembers the late-night discussions with Dr. Nguyen Hoang Oanh, also Vice Principal of Vietnam-Japan University, about the practical applications of the knowledge he had just learned.

In addition to studying, the male student participates in many extracurricular activities, school movements, volunteer clubs, photography, and football. Trung was once the runner-up in the "Mr. Grassfield" contest organized by Hanoi National University.

During four years of university, besides the opportunity to meet and interact with many people and friends, Trung believes that the greatest thing he gained was learning how to live independently and integrate.

Now, after his internship, Trung is waiting for the results of his application to a Japanese big data company. If successful, the starting salary could be up to 45 million VND/month.

“I consider being valedictorian just a plus point in my profile and it helps me feel more confident, but I can’t be complacent about it. I will have to continue to learn a lot because there are many people in the job market who are better than me,” the male student said.

Trung's plan is to continue his studies and gain experience through projects and work related to AI research to contribute to technology development in Vietnam and Japan.
