Bottle cap found in old man's stomach for 60 years

On January 16, specialist doctor Truong Minh Hieu, Head of the Endoscopy Department of Xuyen A Long An General Hospital, said that through endoscopy, doctors discovered a foreign object in the abdomen of patient C., a bottle cap, about 30 mm in diameter and 5 mm thick.

According to Mr. C., when he was about ten years old, he accidentally swallowed a bottle cap (he does not remember what kind of bottle cap it was). After that, he did not have any unusual symptoms, so he did not go to the doctor. Until recently, he had frequent stomach pain and constipation, so his family took him to the hospital for a check-up.

After the doctor removed the foreign object, Mr. C's uncomfortable symptoms reduced and he was discharged from the hospital the same day.

Dr. Hieu said that this is the longest case of a foreign object in the stomach that the hospital has ever received. Sometimes, foreign objects in the stomach have no symptoms or only cause nausea and epigastric pain, so we often ignore them until more severe symptoms appear before going to the doctor. At this time, the foreign object can scratch, even tear and infect the digestive tract.

"To prevent foreign bodies from entering the digestive tract, it is important that people be careful when eating, chew thoroughly, and not eat in a hurry... As soon as there are suspicious symptoms, they need to go to a medical facility immediately to be examined by a doctor and receive appropriate treatment," Dr. Hieu advised.
