Russia will impose a partial ban on diesel exports until the end of the year and extend the current ban on gasoline exports, following a series of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced recently.
The diesel ban applies to retailers but not to producers. Industry sources say the volume of diesel exported by Russian traders is relatively small.
About three-quarters of diesel exports are shipped by producers via northern and southern pipelines, which lead to Baltic and Black Sea ports, respectively. Russia produced nearly 86 million tonnes of diesel last year, exporting about 31 million tonnes, according to industry sources.
Meanwhile, the gasoline ban applies to both producers and resellers, but does not affect intergovernmental agreements between Russia and a number of other countries.
Russia is one of the world's top oil producers. However, the country has tightened fuel exports in recent years to stabilize domestic supplies and curb rising prices.
