According to AP, this could be considered the first time Ukraine has fired long-range missiles into Russian territory since the start of the conflict in 2022.
Kiev's use of ATACMS comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin has lowered the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons, opening up the possibility that Moscow could respond nuclear-wise even if attacked with conventional weapons by any country with the support of a nuclear power.
If the attack is confirmed, it could be a worrying escalation, especially after the US government just gave Kiev the green light to use US-supplied long-range weapons deep into Russian territory.
Also on November 19, Ukraine announced that it had attacked a military weapons depot in Bryansk at midnight, although it did not specify the type of weapon used. The Ukrainian General Staff said that several large explosions and chain explosions could be heard in the target area, near Karachev.

Ukrainian forces are under heavy pressure from Russia on the battlefield at several points along the approximately 1,000 km long front, causing the army to be stretched. Not to mention, Russian UAV and missile attacks are still pouring down.
In a statement carried by Russian news agencies, the Russian Defense Ministry said the country's military shot down five ATACMS missiles and damaged another. The debris fell on an undisclosed military facility. The falling debris caused a fire but there were no casualties or damage.
Karachev is about 115 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border. During the war, Ukraine has repeatedly struck deeper into Russian territory, but mostly with drones rather than missiles. Russian officials have spoken of intercepting Ukrainian drones in Moscow, about 500 kilometers from the border, and most recently in Izhevsk, a city about 1,450 kilometers from the border.
In a related development, Russian news agency RIA Novosti said the country's Air Force conducted glide bombing raids with Su-34 aircraft on Ukrainian forces' positions in Kursk.

“ The crew of the Su-34 multi-role supersonic fighter-bomber of the Aerospace Forces carried out an attack on personnel, military armored vehicles and strongpoints of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the border area of the Kursk region ,” the Russian Defense Ministry said.
The attack was carried out against targets identified by reconnaissance using aviation bombs equipped with multi-purpose programming and correction modules. Russian intelligence confirmed hits on forces, military equipment and strongholds of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
