Russia ready for consultations after nearly 3-year hiatus, but IMF decides to postpone indefinitely

Consultations between the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Russia have been postponed due to lack of technical preparation.

On September 17, in an interview with TASS news agency, Managing Director of the IMF branch in Russia, Mr. Aleksei Mozhin, confirmed that although Moscow was ready for this consultation, the IMF decided to postpone it indefinitely due to lack of adequate technical preparation. This announcement is contrary to the original plan.

Previously, the IMF announced that it would resume direct contacts with Russia from September 16 after a nearly three-year hiatus since the last consultation in 2021, while the IMF delegation last visited the birch country in November 2019.

According to the initial plan, the consultations were to take place online, after which the organization's delegation would travel to Moscow to hold face-to-face meetings to discuss Russia's economic policies and developments.

However, the IMF's decision to resume contact with Russia has faced a wave of opposition from many European countries.

"We would like to express our dissatisfaction with such plans of the IMF," the finance ministers of Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark, Norway and Poland said in a letter to IMF head Kristalina Georgieva.
