(Dan Tri) - Thung Nham Bird Garden ( Ninh Binh ) has hundreds of bird species, especially two rare species, the Heron Crane and the Red-crowned Crane, listed in the Vietnam Red Book.

Thung Nham Bird Garden (Ninh Hai Commune, Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh) is located in a valley surrounded by mountains. The bird habitat is about 18 hectares wide. To get here, visitors must go by boat or walk through many kilometers of forest roads.

The name Thung Nham originates from the terrain of the valley, the land between high mountains; Nham means lava, rocky mountain, or also the name of Hai Nham village, Ninh Hai commune. For many years, Thung Nham bird garden has been famous because it is the largest natural bird sanctuary in the North. This bird garden is also located in the core area of ​​Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex - a World Cultural and Natural Heritage recognized by UNESCO in 2014.

Over the past 20 years, hundreds of bird species from all over the world have flocked to live in Thung Nham in increasing numbers. The largest numbers include birds such as: storks, herons, teals, black-throated magpies, red-whiskered bulbuls, teals, kingfishers, red-whiskered bulbuls...

In particular, at Thung Nham bird garden, there are two rare species listed in the Vietnam Red Book: the Heng He and the Hong Hoang (Earth Phoenix). The Hong Hoang is a sacred animal in the four sacred animals including Dragon - Unicorn - Turtle - Phoenix in Asian culture . This is a bird that often symbolizes nobility and virtue, has the power of resurrection, and brings good luck.

In addition to storks and herons, cranes are one of the common species present in Thung Nham bird garden. They and other wild birds live here all year round, in winter, only a small number migrate to the south. The majority of the rest live in the reserve and thrive when spring and summer come.

Mr. Pham Cong Chat, who has been building and preserving Thung Nham bird garden for more than 20 years, shared that the bird garden initially only had a few species living there. Seeing that this was a good land, he and his colleagues cleared the bushes, dug a larger pond, and planted more trees that birds loved. "Seeing that this area was quiet, safe, and had food available, birds from all over flocked here to live. Over the past 20 years, this place has been home to hundreds of rare bird species, most of which are white storks, egrets, cranes, and teals...", Mr. Chat said.

Every morning, flocks of birds spread out in search of food. In the afternoon, they return to their nests in Thung Nham. The endemic birds here are precious wildlife, creating biodiversity for the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex.

The natural birds in Thung Nham are very close to humans. Therefore, tourists can visit near their habitat every day without fear. The work of protecting the birds in Thung Nham is also carried out very strictly, no one is allowed to hunt or harm the birds or their habitat.

"In all four seasons of the year, rare bird species such as cranes and ground phoenixes are associated with the mountain forests here. In winter, only a few migrate to avoid the cold, the rest stay to stay through the winter. The most numerous here are white storks, cranes, and egrets...", Ms. Tran Thi Thanh Lan, a bird garden employee, confided. With its location hidden deep among the overlapping mountain ranges forming a limestone wall to shield from the wind, Thung Nham bird garden is known as the ideal "home" for many bird species.

Each bird species has its own beauty, they converge on the big house in Thung Nham to create a wild and colorful beauty, which is rare in Vietnam. Mr. Pham Cong Chat added that in the early days, this land was wild and full of reeds. "Back then, to get to this swampy valley, you had to travel all day. It took a lot of effort to open the road and build the bird garden like today," Mr. Chat recalled. Thung Nham Bird Garden is 12km southeast of Ninh Binh city. Coming here, visitors will separate themselves from the hustle and bustle of the bustling city and immerse themselves in the fresh nature of the mountains and forests, the calls of thousands of birds, and the echoes from the deep cliffs, helping the spirit become more relaxed and comfortable.
