Cyber attacks are targeting the construction sector in Southeast Asia.

The construction industry has always been one of the key factors determining the economic development of a country. In Southeast Asia, the industry is on a strong growth path with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) expected to reach 6.2% between 2024 and 2028.

In addition, the application of digital technologies such as AI and automation brings great opportunities, helping to optimize operations in the construction sector. However, this rapid development also comes with many cybersecurity risks. Kaspersky's latest data in the first quarter of 2025 shows that attacks on computers used in industrial control systems (ICS) at construction sites and factories are increasing. Although most of them have been successfully prevented by industrial systems.

Compared to the global average, data from Southeast Asia shows that the rate of ICS computers being attacked by malware in some of the following industries is significantly higher, however, all attacks were successfully prevented. Southeast Asia ranked second globally in the rate of blocking malicious objects on ICS computers, with a rate of 29.1%.

“From 2025 onwards, digital industrial equipment could become targets of cyberattacks due to limitations from outdated security measures. The dependence of remote facilities on cheap network equipment is a weakness that can be easily exploited by bad actors. Therefore, the most urgent goal now is to update the cybersecurity system for old technologies. Most importantly, businesses need to take cybersecurity more seriously. This is not just a cost but also an essential investment to ensure all business activities continue.

To minimize risks and strengthen defenses against ICS threats, Kaspersky experts recommend: Regularly assess the security of Operational Technology systems to promptly detect and eliminate cybersecurity vulnerabilities; Establish a continuous vulnerability assessment and classification process, laying the foundation for effective cybersecurity vulnerability management. Applying specialized solutions such as Kaspersky Industrial CyberSecurity will effectively support with practical action guides - information that businesses often rarely find fully on public sources...
