In episode 148 of Vietnamese Family Home , the story of Ho Nguyen Ai Duyen (2009), an 11th grade student at Hai Lang High School, Hai Lang Commune, Quang Tri Province, deeply moved the audience.
Losing her father to leukemia in 2019, Duyen, her mother and three siblings had to overcome a life of deprivation in Hai Lang commune. Since her husband passed away, the burden of making a living and taking care of four children has fallen on the thin shoulders of Nguyen Thi Tinh (1986) - Ai Duyen's mother. To earn money to take care of her children, Tinh works as a garment worker with an income of about 5 million VND/month. Despite suffering from severe joint pain and stomach pain, she still tries to go to work so that her children do not have to drop out of school. Her eldest son, who is in college, also works part-time to help with her expenses. Duyen has two twin siblings in grade 5, both of whom are still growing up and cannot help yet. In addition to Tinh's income from working as a garment worker, the family also receives orphan support of 1.5 million VND/month.
Understanding her family's situation, Duyen constantly strives to study and always helps her mother with the smallest things. After school, she does not go out but works part-time at a coffee shop, earning 10,000 VND/hour. She usually works from 6pm to 11pm, trying to earn about 1.5 million VND per month to pay for her own tuition, books and reduce the burden on her mother.
Not only does Duyen work part-time, she also helps her mother take care of her twin siblings: from cooking meals to picking them up from school, she tries to fulfill her responsibilities as the eldest sister in the family. Duyen herself dreams of becoming a graphic designer. She loves art and creativity and hopes to one day study interior design so that she can both earn a living and build her mother a spacious, cozy house that she can be proud of.
MC Duong Hong Phuc emotionally shared: One thing that makes the Vietnamese Family Home always supported is because here you can see very filial and well-behaved children, despite their difficult circumstances, they still try to study and think of their parents. The male MC could not hide his emotion when he saw Ai Duyen working extra to earn money to help her mother. He said that the understanding of the orphaned boys and girls is always what makes many people cry.
Singer Hoang Hai also sobbed over the image of the great mother in the program. He said that Ms. Tinh is a happy mother to have understanding children who not only do not feel inferior because of difficult circumstances but also always know how to strive to rise up in adversity. The male singer believes that the children will be successful and be a solid support for their mother in the future.
Another special case in the program is Hoang Khanh Hoang (2009), an 11th grade student at An Luong Dong High School. His father disappeared when his mother was just one month pregnant with him. Since childhood, Hoang has lacked the love of his father. He and his mother depend on each other to live in Loc An commune, Hue city, in a temporary house built on commune land, not knowing when it will be relocated.
Khanh Hoang's mother - Ms. Hoang Thi Hue (1974) has been raising her child alone for all these years and is currently facing the terrible breast cancer. The disease has reached stage 3, Ms. Hue has undergone 8 radiation treatments, making her body gradually thin and weak. The cost of medical examination and medicine is about 1.5 million VND/month. Recently, she had an accident and broke her ribs, had to have surgery and is in the recovery period.
However, she has never given up, still trying to sell noodles every day to earn money to raise and pay for her children's education. Every day she sells 5kg of noodles, earning only about 50,000 VND. She receives 750,000 VND/month due to her serious illness. Hoang alone receives support from benefactors of about 1.5 - 1.6 million VND every 3 months. However, given Ms. Hue's illness, that amount of money is basically not enough.
When Hoang was in second grade, hope came to the family when the father Hoang had never met returned to claim his son. Ms. Hue also felt more secure because she thought that if she could not survive due to serious illness, her son would still have his biological father to rely on. But ironically, the first meeting was also the last because in 2023, Hoang's father passed away from colon cancer. Because of his serious illness, he returned to see his son one last time. For Hoang, the sudden departure of his father became a deep mental shock to him.
Ms. Hue burst into tears because she felt helpless, worried that her illness could cause her child to struggle in the future. She also worried that her child would be left alone if she also passed away from the disease. “I gave my child 10,000 VND for breakfast but he refused, wanting to save it to buy school supplies and medicine for his mother. I woke up early to prepare for the sale, at 5am, my child also got up to help arrange the tables and chairs. I love my child so much ,” Ms. Hue shared.
Witnessing the family's situation, MC Duong Hong Phuc burst into tears because he felt sorry for the mother and child. The male MC felt sorry because even though Hue was seriously ill, she always thought about her child, even thought that if she had money, she would not dare to have surgery but wanted to save money for her child. He continuously encouraged Hue to take care of her health, and at the same time encouraged Hoang to always be strong and try to be a solid support for his mother in the future.
Runner-up Mai Ngo also burst into tears because she sympathized with the pain of the children in the program. Mai Ngo said: “The children's circumstances are similar to mine when I also lost my father at an early age. Especially Hoang's situation, his father left and then came back to take him, my situation is the same, when my mother was pregnant with me, my parents argued and my father left. After my father returned for a while, my father passed away, I understand the feelings of children when they grow up without a father's love, without the love of a complete family. I know everything is very difficult and then every night I have to always reassure myself to overcome those difficulties."
Runner-up Mai Ngo said she did not want to talk too much about the past. However, when participating in Vietnamese Family Home , the beauty queen wanted to affirm that everyone has their own circumstances and a certain starting point, but as long as they understand their own circumstances and never give up, always look forward with a determined gaze, and keep trying, everything will be fine.
“I grew up without a father, I understand that loneliness” – Mai Ngo burst into tears at the Vietnamese Family Shelter when hearing stories about children who lost their fathers at a young age.
“I am a person with very big dreams. My family has no artistic tradition, so my dream of art is very far away from me and will also be a burden for my mother. I understand that, so from a young age, I was aware that when I dare to dream of stepping onto the stage, I will try my best and take care of myself so that my mother will not have to work hard. I do not ask anything from my mother, nor do I dare to compete with her ,” Mai Ngo confided.
The images of mothers who always sacrifice for their children in the program Vietnamese Family Home also made Mai Ngo choke up, because she saw the image of her mother there. Mai Ngo said: “Strong women will never cry in front of their children, and my mother is the same. To me, my mother is a very strong person when facing many hardships in life. I always think that my mother does not deserve to face so much pain. And to me, the greatest sacrifice my mother made for her children was not to take another step so that she could take the best care of my sisters and me. My mother always wanted to give the best things to my sisters and me.”
