New research on treating Alzheimer's disease with magnetic fields

Magnetic fields can affect the size and structure of amyloid-beta protein clusters - a key factor in plaque formation in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease.

On July 31, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel) published a new study on Alzheimer's disease in the journal ACS Nano.

Magnetic fields can affect the size and structure of amyloid-beta protein clusters - a key factor in plaque formation in the brains of people with Alzheimer's disease.

According to the researchers' observations, when the magnetic field was adjusted in a certain direction, the protein fibers formed in nearly twice the number and up to 20 times longer than when the magnetic field was adjusted in the opposite direction.

Experimenting with mirror-image proteins reversed this effect, demonstrating how magnetic forces affect molecular shape.

This phenomenon has been documented in chemistry before, but this is the first time it has been discovered in biology, demonstrating the surprising role of magnetism in protein formation.

Research opens up the potential to slow or even prevent Alzheimer's disease by controlling harmful protein buildup through spin-based nanoparticles.

In other words, these are nanoparticles specially designed to interact with magnetic fields, based on a quantum property called spin. In quantum physics, spin is an intrinsic property of subatomic particles such as electrons./.
