US Secretary of State prepares to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping

On June 18, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had "frank, substantive and constructive" talks with his Chinese counterpart Qin Gang in Beijing.

According to Reuters news agency, US diplomatic officials said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on June 19.

Earlier in the day, Secretary of State Blinken met and held talks with Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, in an effort to improve bilateral relations that have become very tense.

Mr. Blinken is on a two-day visit to China, the first by a US secretary of state in five years.

On June 18, Mr. Blinken had "frank, substantive and constructive" talks with his Chinese counterpart Qin Gang in Beijing.

The two foreign ministers stressed the importance of diplomacy and maintaining open channels of communication on all issues to reduce the risk of competition leading to conflict, and expressed their desire to soon stabilize bilateral relations.

Secretary of State Blinken affirmed that the US does not want to "decouple" from China and has an agreement for the two sides to continue negotiations to achieve progress on a number of issues.

For his part, Foreign Minister Qin Gang clarified China 's concerns about its core interests , including the Taiwan issue, and said that this is the "most prominent risk" in China- US relations./.
