In an interview in the documentary "Belgrade" dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia (March 24, 1999 - March 24, 2024), Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said that current European leaders do not consider national interests as a top priority but tie them to "the West's need for unity".
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that by announcing the possibility of deploying troops to Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron is trying to "please" US leaders, as well as provoke NATO allies, while affirming that the French leader's actions are not related to plans to create "strategic autonomy" for Europe.
Foreign Minister Lavrov stated: "Europe has completely 'fallen' into the trap of American domination. There is no independence. All the talk of (President) Macron in recent years, and he periodically 'revives' the dialogue in the media about creating some kind of 'strategic autonomy' - all this turned out to be a 'failure'".
Foreign Minister Lavrov also called the European Union (EU) a "controversial organization" where "narrow personal political plans, aspirations and intrigues take precedence over the national interests of citizens and member states."
