Russian Foreign Minister visits North Korea

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov arrived in Pyongyang from Beijing, where President Putin today called Chinese President Xi Jinping an "old friend" in Putin's rare foreign trip since Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, according to AFP.

Lavrov's two-day visit comes a month after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made a rare visit to Russia, inviting Putin to Pyongyang and discussing military cooperation, according to Reuters.

Lavrov may inform the North Korean side about the results of President Putin's visit to China and discuss a potential visit to Pyongyang by the Russian leader, according to TASS news agency. Lavrov last visited North Korea in 2018.

Earlier, US special envoy for North Korea Sung Kim on October 17 called the relationship between North Korea and Russia "worrying", after the White House said last week that Pyongyang had recently supplied weapons to Russia.

There are growing reports from the US government and Western researchers documenting with satellite imagery what they say are North Korean arms shipments to Russia for use in the conflict in Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on October 17 that Western accusations were not based on evidence, and stressed that Russia would continue to strengthen relations with North Korea, according to Reuters.
