Patients receive dialysis in Can Gio

VnExpressVnExpress10/10/2023

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health has just approved dialysis technology at the Can Gio District Medical Center, helping patients in the area avoid having to travel dozens of kilometers into the city.

On October 10, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health Tang Chi Thuong said that currently, 16 out of 41 patients with kidney failure, residing in Can Gio district, Can Giuoc district ( Long An province) and neighboring areas of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province have registered for dialysis in Can Gio.

The dialysis unit, supported by Le Van Thinh Hospital, is deployed at Can Gio District Medical Center and is expected to officially operate next week. The hospital has assigned medical staff with experience in dialysis to directly take charge of and manage the operation of the RO system, ensuring the safety of dialysis patients in Can Gio.

Can Gio is the only coastal district in Ho Chi Minh City, located in the southeast, about 50 km from the city center by road. Thanh An is one of 6 communes in Can Gio district, also the only island commune of the city, about 8 km from the district center with about 5,000 people.

In recent years, many patients with chronic kidney failure in Can Gio have to go to hospitals in the inner city for dialysis. Patients in Thanh An island commune have it more difficult, spending 25 hours going back and forth for one dialysis session, three times a week. They have to ask relatives to take them on a boat across the sea to Can Thanh town to rent a room to stay overnight, and at dawn take a bus to the hospital for dialysis. Many people have to stop treatment midway.

Mr. Thuong highly appreciated the efforts of Le Van Thinh Hospital in completing the facilities, machinery and equipment to meet the requirements of dialysis. The Department continues to work with the Ho Chi Minh City Social Insurance to ensure that patients enjoy health insurance payment regimes and feel secure in their treatment.

The implementation of dialysis technology is part of the Project to Strengthen and Enhance the Medical Capacity of Can Gio District from now until 2025 and the following years of the Ho Chi Minh City health sector, contributing to starting the roadmap to re-establish Can Gio Hospital.

Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has 4 districts that only have medical centers, no hospitals (districts 3, 5, 10 and Can Gio district). According to the plan, one of these 4 localities that needs to soon re-establish a hospital type is Can Gio district, due to very special characteristics such as being far from the city center, around the district medical center there are no city hospitals like in districts 3, 5 and 10.

The Department of Health continues to call on hospitals to continue to voluntarily register to support resources so that Can Gio can soon re-establish a general hospital model to fully provide essential technical services and better treat common diseases for Can Gio residents.

Over the past year, the Department has sent young volunteer doctors on a temporary rotation to take care of the health of the people of Thanh An island commune. The Department has also proposed deploying a water ambulance to provide emergency care to people in Can Gio district and neighboring areas. Up to now, when necessary, Thanh An people have had to contact the commune People's Committee's canoe to bring patients to the mainland, which is dangerous when there are strong winds and waves, and sometimes delays the golden time for emergency care, endangering their lives.
