Dom (29 years old) lives in Deptford, London (UK). When sharing this incident with the media, he asked to hide his last name and only used the name Dom, according to The Independent (UK).
Mr. Dom in London (UK) had a close call when his newly purchased vape exploded after being plugged in to charge.
Dom, who lives in an apartment block on London’s New Cross Road, bought a vape, or electronic cigarette, from a nearby shop a few days before the incident. The vape he bought was a reputable brand and cost £9.99.
A few days later, the vape ran out of battery and Dom needed to charge it. He plugged it into a power outlet near his bed, then left the room.
But the unexpected happened. The vape that was charging suddenly exploded. Smoke then came out of the bedroom and the fire alarm blared loudly.
Dom immediately ran in to check and saw a large hole in his mattress. The fire was caused by the vape exploding, burning the bed sheet, the outer mattress and exposing the inner mattress.
"The fire alarm went off for about five minutes. I was in the hallway and saw thick smoke in the bedroom. On the bed, the mattress was on fire," Dom said.
At first, he didn’t know what was happening. But when he saw part of the vape stick stuck to the wall, he realized it had exploded. Luckily, the incident was not serious, only burning a mattress and not causing major damage to the apartment.
After the incident, the man realized that the store that sold him the vape was not licensed to sell electronic cigarette devices. Dom also suspected that the vape he bought was likely a fake, according to The Independent.
