World's oldest person dies at age 116

(CLO) Ms. Tomiko Itakeoka, who was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest person in September 2024, passed away at a nursing home in Ashiya city, Hyogo prefecture, Japan.

According to information from the Japanese Ministry of Health and local authorities, she died of old age at 9:03 pm on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the age of 116.

Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, Itakeoka was the eldest of three children. Her life spanned many important historical events, from World War I, World War II, to the period when Japan became one of the world's leading economies .

She spent most of her life in Ashiya, a coastal city in Hyogo Prefecture. In her later years, she was attached to a nursing home for the elderly there.

In December 2023, Ms. Itakeoka was recognized as the oldest person in Japan after Ms. Fusa Tatsumi, 116 years old, a resident of Kashiwara city, Osaka prefecture, passed away.

In September 2024, she was officially recognized by Guinness as the world's oldest living person, succeeding 117-year-old Maria Branyas Morera from Olot, Catalonia, Spain, who passed away earlier.

Itakeoka's death marks a historic milestone for Japan's elderly community, which is known for having the world's longest life expectancy. Local officials and her family said she lived a simple life, attached to traditional values, and received dedicated care in her final years.

In addition to her personal marks, Mrs. Itakeoka is also a symbol of endurance and longevity, reflecting Japan's healthy lifestyle culture and unique nutritional regimen.

The city government has sent its deepest condolences to her family and loved ones. She left behind a legacy not only of longevity but also of inspiration to many generations about the value of life.
