High risk of landslides, Na Meo border commune builds temporary shelters, ready to evacuate

(Baothanhhoa.vn) - Faced with the complicated developments caused by storm No. 3, on the morning of July 21, the border commune of Na Meo organized the construction of temporary shelters, preparing a plan to evacuate people to safety in case of landslides.

Na Meo commune officials inspected the actual cracks in the hill above the residential area of ​​Cha Khot village.

Due to the impact of storm No. 4 at the end of September 2024, the hill above the residential area, school and cultural house of Cha Khot village, Na Meo commune suffered serious landslides, damaging and deforming 12 houses. In addition, many cracks appeared on the hill, about 300m long.

According to the survey, the average crack width is 50-70cm, many landslides have a depth of about 1m-2m. The landslide has directly threatened the lives of all 55 households with 220 people living in the village.

The risk of landslides recurring after storm No. 3 in many residential areas in Na Meo commune is being assessed at a very high level.

In early October 2024, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee announced an emergency situation of landslides here. At the same time, he requested relevant departments, branches and local authorities to immediately deploy necessary measures to ensure the safety of people and property of households living in the affected area.

Cha Khot village is located on the Vietnam - Laos border, is mainly inhabited by Thai ethnic people, far from the center of Na Meo commune, transportation is still difficult. Although there is a national power grid, the telecommunication signal in the village is not stable, so information and communication are still difficult.

Na Meo Commune mobilized forces to build temporary shelters, ready to evacuate Cha Khot villagers to safety in case of landslides.

According to Mr. Ngan Phuc Hau, Vice Chairman of Na Meo Commune People's Committee, after the emergency situation was declared, the people of Cha Khot village are still waiting for the State to invest in resettlement areas to stabilize their lives. Given the complicated developments of storm No. 3, especially the possibility of prolonged heavy rain due to the storm's circulation, the risk of landslides in Cha Khot village is very high, the Party Committee and People's Committee of Na Meo commune have urgently and proactively deployed response plans.

Accordingly, since July 20, the commune has assigned cadres to directly go to the village to propagate and mobilize people to prepare necessities and essential items, ready to evacuate to safe shelters. At the same time, it has organized forces to build temporary camps to serve the evacuation of people in emergency situations.

The temporary shelter is located in a safe location, next to the border patrol road, about 1km from Cha Khot residential area, convenient for evacuation in case of emergency.

Vice Chairman of Na Meo Commune People's Committee Ngan Phuc Hau added that with the participation of many local forces and the support of the Border Guard and the Police, on the morning of July 21, the temporary shelter was basically completed, meeting the temporary shelter needs of all Cha Khot villagers when landslides occur. The commune has also proactively provided necessary conditions to serve people during the shelter period, such as food, food, electricity, drinking water, etc.

Na Meo commune leaders checked the progress and encouraged forces to build temporary shelters.

In addition to Cha Khot village, according to review and assessment, in Na Meo commune there are 2 more points at risk of landslides, affecting 16 households with 67 people. In addition, 3 villages Son, Sa Na, Che Lau are at high risk of being isolated due to landslides causing traffic interruptions and stagnation.

After reviewing and evaluating, Na Meo commune has proactively developed specific plans for each natural disaster situation. At the same time, it has prepared forces, vehicles, and logistics, ready to respond as quickly as possible to all situations, ensuring the safety of people's lives and property.
