Nguyen Thi Oanh sets national marathon record

With a strong point in middle distances, Nguyen Thi Oanh has recently started to challenge herself more on long-distance routes. The athlete born in 1993 decided to participate in the longest distance (42 km) of the Viettel Marathon Hanoi 2024 - the second leg of the series of races taking place in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The SEA Games champion in 1,500m, 3,000m obstacle and 5,000m also set the national marathon record.

This is a tournament coordinated by the Vietnam Athletics Federation, supervised and professionally consulted by the Asian Athletics Federation. The running route of the tournament is different from most marathon events, that is, heading to the suburbs instead of the center, with an open running route, avoiding congestion and affecting people's lives.

On the 42.194 km men's race, record holder Hoang Nguyen Thanh and his senior Nguyen Van Lai had a dramatic race from the first kilometers all the way to the finish line in My Dinh Stadium.

In the end, Nguyen Thanh surpassed his senior in the final kilometers to finish first, becoming the champion of the race with a time of 2 hours 28 minutes 21 seconds. Meanwhile, Nguyen Van Lai also competed excellently to finish just 1 second behind his junior.

Immediately after the dramatic competition above, the women's full marathon race witnessed the national record breaking of Nguyen Thi Oanh. Last September, Nguyen Thi Oanh conquered the international marathon course in Hanoi with a time of 2 hours 44 minutes 20 seconds despite heavy rain, thereby setting a new national record.

Oanh "in" broke Hoang Ngoc Hoa's old record of 2 hours 44 minutes 52 seconds, set at the international marathon in Hong Kong in early 2024. And this morning, Nguyen Thi Oanh once again surpassed Ngoc Hoa to win the race. Athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh finished with a time of 2 hours 39 minutes 49 seconds, while Ngoc Hoa achieved a time of 2 hours 47 minutes 42 seconds.

Nguyen Thi Oanh set a national record when competing in the Hanoi Marathon 2024 which took place this morning, December 1.
