Truong Vinh Ky (1837-1898), birth name Truong Chanh Ky, was a typical Vietnamese writer, linguist, educator and cultural researcher in the 19th century.
From the age of 3, he knew the Three Character Classic by heart. At the age of 4, he learned to write. At the age of 5, he went to school to learn Chinese and Nom characters. After a few years, he mastered the Minh Tam Buu Giam, read the Four Books and Five Classics, and knew many Tang and Song poems...
As early as the 50s and 60s of the 19th century, he was fluent in many Southeast Asian languages as well as other languages in the world such as: Cambodian, Thai, Lao, Malaysian, Myanmar, Cham, Indian languages, Chinese, Japanese, English, French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Greek, Latin... to easily communicate and integrate with countries in the region and the world.
Fluent in 26 languages, in 1874, Truong Vinh Ky was voted by the world as a "linguist", included in the list of 18 world scholars of the 19th century, and listed in the Larousse dictionary.

In 1848, at the age of 11, Truong Vinh Ky was sent to study in Pinhalu (Phnom Penh, Cambodia). The class had 25 students from 13 to 15 years old and Truong Vinh Ky was the youngest. He met and lived with students from Southeast Asian countries such as: Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, China, Japan, India... As a result, he spoke and wrote fluently the language of his schoolmates.
Truong Vinh Ky also studied foreign languages from books and dictionaries in the school library. Contemporary linguists said that Truong Vinh Ky discovered the similar and different grammar rules of foreign languages to learn quickly and easily.
On the day of graduation from Pinhalu Seminary, Truong Vinh Ky was chosen as an excellent student, finishing at the top of his class, and was selected with two others to continue studying on Penang Island, Malaysia.
During his time studying in Penang, Truong Vinh Ky taught himself Japanese and Indian by cutting out old newspapers, then using comparison and deductive methods to find out grammar tips.
The British photographer J.Thomson wrote a book called “Ten Years of Traveling to China and Indochina”, in which he wrote: “One day when I visited Truong Vinh Ky, I saw him compiling a book called Comparative Analysis of the Major Languages of the World , which he spent many years working diligently on. Around him were many precious and rare books that he had found in Europe, Asia…”.

Mr. Truong Vinh Ky was invited to be a member of the Anthropological and Scientific Association of Western France, the Asian Cultural Monograph Association, the Geographical Association in Paris, the Humanities and Sciences Association... In 1874, he was appointed Professor of Asian Languages.
As a professor, then principal of the Interpreter School and the Saigon Pedagogical School, he brought the national language out of the four closed walls of the monastery and placed it in the heart of life, first of all in schools.

Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted was established in 1927 and is one of the oldest high schools in Saigon. The school was originally named Petrus Truong Vinh Ky High School.

In his old age, scholar Truong Vinh Ky personally designed and supervised the construction of his mausoleum. His current mausoleum is located in a 2,000m2 area in Ho Chi Minh City, with unique architecture.
On the tomb door is the inscription “Fons Vitae Eruditio Possidentis” (roughly translated: Knowledge is the source of life for those who possess it). Inside the tomb are 3 tombs paved flat on the floor, with 3 stone slabs of different colors, about 1 meter wide and 2 meters long.
The grave in the middle belongs to Mr. Truong Vinh Ky, and the two graves on the sides belong to his wife and children. In the cemetery grounds, there is also an ancient house built by Mr. Truong Vinh Ky in 1886.
