Coast guard officials from Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia flew in from Batam Island (western Indonesia and near Singapore) to be briefed on the high-tech surveillance equipment.

The training is part of the Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) training program launched by the Japan Coast Guard last year. A dedicated unit was established in 2017 to help Asian countries build their maritime security capabilities.

Southeast Asia is strategically important to Japan as it borders the South China Sea, home to some of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

“I think we have growing challenges,” Philippine Coast Guard Command Center Director Roland Lorenzana told reporters after the training.

The MDA aims to maintain order at sea and Japan wants to continue contributing to stability in the Asia- Pacific , said Motonari Adachi, Deputy Director General of the Japan Coast Guard Administration.
