Many candidates study extra classes all week, competing in separate exams to win tickets to university.

Aiming for a score of over 25 points in the high school graduation exam and over 100 points in the Hanoi National University's competency assessment exam, Nguyen Quang Vinh, Le Quy Don High School ( Thai Binh ) is "crazy" with a full-week study schedule.

“In addition to class time, I also study Math, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology on weeknights. As for English, I study at the center on the weekends. The remaining time, I join exam preparation groups to find information and refer to previous years' competency assessment tests to review,” Quang Vinh said.

This is the final stage so Vinh is focusing on studying. If he only relies on his graduation score, it will be difficult to secure a place in his favorite choice - Pharmacy, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi .

Quang Vinh has registered for 2/6 rounds of this year's competency assessment exam. He decided to take the first round to understand the exam structure, then he will focus all his efforts to achieve the best score in the second round.

In the final race, Nguyen Tu Anh, from Truong Dinh High School (Hanoi), takes 10 extra classes per week. This year, Tu Anh plans to take the university entrance exam with group D in three subjects: Math, Literature, and English, but is still required to take History, Geography, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry to take the competency assessment exam of Hanoi National University and Hanoi Pedagogical University. On average, Tu Anh has to take 1-2 extra classes per subject per week, both on Saturdays and Sundays.

Tu Anh also consulted her seniors, if she wanted to get into a big university, she could not ignore the ability assessment test. “If you get good scores in these two ability assessment tests, you will be considered to have passed the university entrance exam early, the remaining time you just need to study enough to graduate from high school. Therefore, no matter how tired you are, you must try your best in this final stage,” Tu Anh said.

The separate exams are often considered more difficult than the high school graduation exam. Candidates will have to flexibly apply the comprehensive knowledge of subjects from three years of study.

This year, student Dong Phuong Dung, Thai Binh High School for the Gifted, aims to enter the Economics major of top universities such as National Economics University, University of Economics - Hanoi National University. However, up to now, solving the competency assessment test is still difficult for Phuong Dung because the content of the questions is very broad, synthesizing knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

"Currently, many universities use the results of competency and thinking assessment exams for admission. Therefore, if you want to improve your chances of being admitted to universities, taking these exams is something you and your friends cannot ignore," Phuong Dung said.

A teacher at Truong Dinh High School (Hanoi) said that currently many candidates want to participate and focus on exams that assess their abilities and thinking, but neglect the high school graduation exam.

If students take too many exams, it will be difficult for them to ensure their studies in class. Not to mention, to take each exam separately, they need to pay different exam fees, some schools up to 500,000 VND/time. When candidates register for many exams at the same time, it means they have to pay a larger amount of money.

“The fact that many universities organize their own exams is considered to create more opportunities and open up more choices for candidates. However, to open the door to university with the majors that candidates love, they need to have a thorough understanding and clearly identify which exams are necessary and suitable for their own abilities to register for. Students should not follow the trend of participating in many separate exams,” the female teacher advised.

The Law on Higher Education stipulates that higher education institutions are autonomous in deciding on their admission methods. Therefore, universities, based on current admission regulations, are completely allowed to organize their own exams.
