Many changes in the Top 100 rankings

In the Top 100 of VNUR-2024, 7 higher education institutions (HEIs) maintained their ranking positions compared to 2023. In addition, 36 units in the Top 100 of VNUR-2023 increased their rankings in the Top 100 of VNUR-2024. In the group of schools that increased their rankings, Hanoi University of Science and Technology increased the most with 52 places.

Meanwhile, 16 units in the Top 100 last year are not present in this year's Top 100. In contrast, 16 other units are present in the group of 100 leading schools for the first time, ranked from 45-100.

Notably, 41 schools that were in the Top 100 last year were relegated this year.

Some other notable points related to the schools in the top 100 this year. For example, the number of years of establishment of schools in VNUR-2024 has increased slightly compared to 2023. The average age of the schools in the highest ranked group is 49 years, the group with the average age is around 32 years. The group of schools with lower rankings has changed more as the old schools tend to enter the Top 100 and push the younger schools out of the group.

In terms of geographical distribution, the group of high-ranking schools is most concentrated in the Red River Delta and the Southeast. Multidisciplinary universities still dominate with a rate of 49%. Public universities still account for the majority of the Top 100 in 2024 with a rate of 83%, while private universities account for only 17%.

Compared to the Top 10 leading schools of 2023, this year 9 schools continue to be present. Notably, the University of Commerce entered this group for the first time with an increase of 27 places and ranked 8th. Many schools have changed their rankings in the group such as: Hanoi National University of Education increased in rank, Can Tho University and Da Nang University decreased in rank and some schools left the Top 10.

What criteria are university rankings based on?

This is the second year VNUR has published the ranking of Vietnamese universities. In this version, the set of standards and criteria used for ranking has some changes and adjustments to increase accuracy and reliability. In 2024, this ranking is based on 6 standards and 18 selected criteria, comprehensively reflecting the basic missions of universities such as: training, scientific research and community service.

Of which, 6 standards include: recognized quality (30%), teaching (25%), publication of scientific articles (20%), scientific and technological tasks and inventions (10%), learner quality (10%) and facilities (5%).

The 2024 Vietnam University Rankings reviewed all 237 Vietnamese higher education institutions through processing big data including: public reports; admission projects; ranking data of global rankings such as QS, THE, ARWU, accreditation of the Ministry of Education and Training, rankings of QS Stars and UPM, data of Web of Science (WOS) and SCOPUS in the 5-year period (2019-2023); data on science and technology activities and inventions of the Ministry of Science and Technology; data on prestigious scientific journals of the State Council of Professors... Of which, 193 schools have sufficient data to conduct the ranking.
