The nightmare of a 9x girl in the evil cult of the Mother Church of God
Beautiful, talented, gentle... are the adjectives that people give to Nguyen Thi Tuyet Mai after meeting the girl born in 1995. Mai has many talents, from singing, playing instruments to being an MC. Mai also had it all: family, friends and a bright future ahead.
After 5 years of participating in this Church, all those good things gradually closed before Mai's eyes, but because of her blind faith, Mai still could not feel it. Only when she suddenly realized that that place was hell on earth, an extreme multi-level model, a lie that drowned many futures and happiness... did she use her weak arms to try to reopen that gradually closing door and return to the life she originally belonged to.
In a coffee shop deep in an alley in Hanoi , in a conversation with reporter Mai could not hide her indignation every time she mentioned the Church and the brainwashing tricks of the so-called Prophets.
Mai said she first learned about this organization while sitting in a coffee shop. That afternoon in October 2016, Mai was resting after her internship. A close friend invited her for coffee and Mai accepted. When she arrived, in addition to her friend, Mai also saw a stranger with her.
Not only is Mai multi-talented, she is also a student who loves to read books. When she heard her best friend introduce a book called the Bible, which is famous and has a lot of good knowledge, she trusted her friend and was curious about the book so she was not wary and listened attentively.
“At the end of the session, I was told about the Apocalypse, when the Earth would be destroyed, but there was a way for me to survive that day. The story was at its most dramatic when the two friends made an appointment for another session. At that meeting, they promised to share with me the way to survive,” Mai confided, adding that at that time, Mai did not know that her friend was a “Saint”.
As promised, in the second meeting, Mai was told about the way to survive the Apocalypse, which is the Passover ritual. In this ritual, the illusions about God's absolute protection, having eternal life after eating bread and drinking wine, Mai was still sober enough not to put her faith.
“Seeing me worried, my friend called a person who had a position in this Church. I don’t know what they talked about, but my friend’s face was quite tense.
As soon as the phone was turned off, he turned to me and said, “If you don’t take him away now, are you going to let him die?” It was only much later that I realized that what I was hearing and being exposed to was actually a trick of that organization to lure and brainwash him,” Mai said.
With the guidance and introduction of her friend, Mai went to an apartment to have a protection ceremony. There was no worshiping object there, it was just like an office. 6-7 people in the room welcomed Mai enthusiastically, asking her questions like family members.
“Their first impression of me was quite good, but I still didn’t believe what my friends said about the Apocalypse. However, I decided to stay in this environment because I felt comfortable with everyone’s openness and friendliness. Moreover, I have free time and like reading books, so I always consider this as a club to relieve stress.
Later, when I participated deeply and for a long time in this organization, I understood that stopping at the most dramatic content or creating friendliness and openness is the way people are trained to manipulate psychology, how to effectively preach, and lead many people into evil ways," Mai shared.
Before the official Passover celebration which takes place in April every year, Mai is baptized to, as the Prophets here say, help Mai be protected on the Day of Judgment.
However, at this time, Mai's faith was not strong enough to be able to trade her future for a religion that she did not understand anything about. However, Mai's mind was manipulated by threats from this organization about the Lake of Hell, the End of the World, life being more uncertain if Mai left the Association or did not go to preach... making it impossible for a female student like Mai to escape from fear.
“They quote a verse from their Bible, “A dog returns to its own vomit, and a sow returns to its wallowing in the mire,” and cite a story about a person who left the Church and died in an accident or went crazy, wandering around the cemetery, constantly muttering nonsense.
Those evidences made me confused. I was even more scared when I discovered that this was a religion and used Google to search for information about this organization.
Everything I found said that this church spreads superstition, but when I asked my friend, he did not reply via text message but told me to go to Zion - where God resides, reigns directly and promises forgiveness of sins, where the 3 times and 7 solemn feasts of the new covenant are kept - to talk directly," Mai recalled.
The information created by people outside this Church is all slanderous and false information. You should only listen to the Prophet in the Church, not to anyone outside this organization, including your parents.
They also said that Mai reading contradictory information on the internet was given by the devil. If Mai believed those words, she would lose her soul and go to the Lake of Hell, encountering many risks and accidents.
This organization also planted in Mai the thought that her parents were the ones who gave birth to her but were only her parents in the flesh, their souls belonged to the devil and would be controlled by the devil. That's why she shouldn't trust her parents.
“At that time, I was taught to be isolated from the outside world , not to have much contact with friends and parents, so I spent most of my time here studying the Bible. They taught that if you stray from God even a little bit, you will be drawn to the devil,” Mai recalled.
During the meetings at Zion, Mai and her siblings only talked about God the Father and Mother, the Bible, the Kingdom of Heaven, worship, prayer... but never mentioned anything about studying, work, or social relationships.
After the lessons here, Mai no longer searched for information about this organization online and became more afraid to go out into society. Mai also trusted the Church more because she thought this was a safe place, while society outside belonged to the devil.
While studying their so-called Bible, Mai also had to do her graduation project, she had almost no free time. There were days when she went to school all day, and before she could even eat dinner, Mai received a call from someone in the newspaper organization to come study.
Mai refused because she was tired, but they still called, called a lot. Sometimes they persuaded her with love, sometimes they threatened her with the Lake of Hell and the Apocalypse. They also used tricks, saying that today's lesson was very important and could only be learned once to appeal to Mai's curiosity, luring her to the lecture.
In Mai's memory, each lesson has different content, sometimes it presents science , sometimes it presents historical facts, sometimes it is content related to world-shaking events and upheavals...
When a theory is said but is not true, has not happened, has not come true, the Prophet here will manipulate the psychology of the "Saints" with reasoning, God gives more time for the brothers and sisters in the Church to do this and that, like repentance and atonement.
Mai once asked her friends and even asked someone with a high position in the organization, and received an answer, probably in a few months. And Mai also learned the lesson The Bridegroom Came Late, which talks about Jesus coming late to pick up His children, meaning the End of the World will be delayed.
“We learn like that every year. At the beginning of the year, we learn that the end of the world is just a few months away, so we have to go out and preach more, save more people for the church, but in the middle of the year, we don’t see the end of the world. At the end of the year, we don’t see it, so we learn the lesson The Bridegroom is Late.
The Church also teaches us that going out to socialize is a sign of worldly love, and such people will be cursed. Or going to work to earn money, going to school and forgetting God will not bring us blessings and luck.
Then Mai thoughtfully recalled the years when she was caught up in the whirlwind of preaching, forgetting her duties as a child, and unable to keep her passionate heart and love for singing and reading.
It also taught Mai that in this Church, the “Saints” are like branches, and God is the vine. If the branches do not bear fruit, God will cut them off and throw them into the Lake of Fire. That also means, “Saints” like Mai who cannot connect people to the Church will be thrown into the Lake of Fire.
Partly out of compassion for others who are about to suffer the pain of the Apocalypse, partly out of fear of being cursed and thrown into the Lake of Fire, Mai, like many other “Saints,” put aside their work, studies, and social relationships to focus on preaching. They even devoted all their money to preaching.
Mai remembers one time, when the group met via Zoom, a friend said he cried a lot because for the past few months he had only eaten instant noodles to save money to focus on preaching, and he had lost a lot of weight. At that time, many people, including Mai, praised and admired his faith because they thought he had sacrificed and devoted himself to God.
Later, after leaving the Church, looking back at her actions and those of the other "Saints", Mai saw that it was a way to torture herself for nothing.
“I was like that too. When I was doing my graduation project, the Prophet who was in charge of me kept calling and asking me to go preach, take care of this person and that person, making my time completely full, without rest. At night, I slept for 3-4 hours, the rest was for doing my project, preaching, worshiping.
My health was getting worse day by day, I had many illnesses such as stomach problems, physical weakness... but because I had been in the Church for a while, absorbed the ideology here and was afraid of being cursed by God, so even so, I still tried my best to ensure my studies, preach the gospel and serve the Church.
I also did not have enough money for food and medical treatment. I cried a lot and lived a long time in misery.
Besides the worship services (Tuesday evening and all day Saturday), before the holidays, we would go to Zion to clean and cook. I also thought, my parents raised me and gave me money to live on, why should I serve others, people who have nothing to do with me. But unfortunately, I only think like that now because before I blindly listened to their teachings,” Mai confided.
Mai once sought out the Prophet to cry and release her inner frustrations, but instead of receiving words of comfort and encouragement, this man said that it was something to be happy about, a path that needed to be taken because Jesus had walked a very difficult path, now we follow that path, we should be happy instead of complaining. If we complain, that is something God hates. Mai continued to endure hearing those words.
After leaving the Church and working to earn money, Mai realized that this organization was leading the “Saints” away from reality, always waiting for God’s blessing and praying. Reality showed that if one wanted to escape poverty and illness, even “Saints” had to work to earn money and could not delude themselves.
In 2018, when the press and police got involved, this Church revised its doctrine, no longer as harsh and strict as before, they loosened up and let the "Saints" work more.
“There are people who leave the Church, they do not discover whether the Church teaches right or wrong, but simply they find it too miserable.
As for me, studying the Bible continuously makes my faith grow. I was born into a well-educated family, my father is a traditional medicine practitioner, my mother is a teacher, and I had little contact with society since I was young. When I studied far from home, not close to my parents, the time I was preached to was also when my friends were busy with their projects, so no one followed me closely, advised me, or showed me the way. Students like me are always the first target of the Church.
Before 2018, many students were led into it, many couples divorced because the wife followed the Church, the husband did not, and vice versa, causing religious conflicts in the family, parents disowned their children, children left home...", Mai shared.
