OpenAI has announced a series of new controls to help teens use ChatGPT in a safer and more age-appropriate way. The move comes after concerns about the negative impact of AI chatbots on young people.
Both parents and teens need to have their own accounts. Linking can be done via email or text invitation from either party. Once linked, the teen's account will have automatic content filters applied.

Teen accounts will be protected from graphic content, viral challenges, emotional or violent roles, and extreme beauty standards. Parents can turn these filters off, but teens can't do it themselves.
Parents can set “quiet hours” to prevent ChatGPT from running at night, turn off conversation recording, disable voice mode, and prevent chat data from being used to train AI.
OpenAI will deploy a system that alerts parents if a teen shows signs of severe stress or thoughts of self-harm. A team of experts will assess the situation and send an alert via email, text message or push notification.
OpenAI says it will only share information necessary to enable parents or support staff to intervene in a timely manner. It acknowledges the system is not perfect, but prefers action over silence.
