Efforts to make Con Co strong in economy, beautiful in culture, and strong in national defense

Con Co Island, Quang Tri Province has a particularly important position in terms of national defense and security. After 20 years since Con Co Island District was established on October 1 (2004 - 2024), and 65 years since the Con Co Island Armed Forces tradition on August 8 (1959 - 2024), the Party Committee, army and people of Con Co have strived to overcome difficulties, promote socio -economic development associated with strengthening the construction of national defense, people's security, and building a solid district defense area.

In the early days of its establishment, despite many difficulties and shortages, the Party Committee, government, army and people of Con Co island district were united, proactive and creative in carrying out the local political tasks. At the same time, they promoted the attention, leadership, direction and direct, comprehensive support of the central government and the province to gradually and successfully implement the goal of building Con Co island district strong in economy, beautiful in culture, and strong in national defense and security. Up to now, the locality has achieved many basic and solid results.

In the economic field, the island district pays special attention to planning and planning management, focusing on mobilizing resources to implement programs, projects and proposals. Accordingly, it has completed all types of planning for the period 2011 - 2020, with a vision to 2030 as a basis for the district to plan its development. Calling for investment in socio-economic development, ensuring national defense and security associated with preserving the natural environment, ecology, and adapting to climate change.

Total social investment capital for the 2005 - 2024 period reached 1,834 billion VND, with priority given to key and breakthrough projects, supporting projects, cultural institutions, and civil works.

Electricity and water supply services have been invested in. Since 2016, we have been proactive in providing clean water for daily life. A seawater filtration system with a filtration capacity of 200 m3/day and night has been put into use, ensuring the water needs of officers, soldiers and people on the island and tourists ; electricity is guaranteed 24/24 hours.

Since its establishment, the district has gradually established an economic structure with tourism - services as the main force and forestry - fisheries as the supporting sector, following the consistent viewpoint of socio-economic development coupled with ensuring national defense and security.

Since 2017, when the Government and the Provincial People's Committee allowed the opening of a tourist route to Con Co Island, infrastructure and service quality have been improved, gradually meeting the needs of tourists. Some types of tourism have been effectively exploited such as sightseeing spots, diving to see coral, and typical cuisine of the island. A number of tours and routes have been linked to bring tourists to the island. From 2017 to April 2024, it has attracted 38,419 visitors, with total tourism revenue reaching 44.6 billion VND.

The island district focuses on mobilizing all resources to invest in building works such as: cultural houses, artifact exhibition houses, community activity houses, systems of houses, sports and gymnasiums; entertainment areas, installation of loudspeaker systems in public places and residential areas; implementing action movements to create a healthy cultural environment, suitable to the socio-economic development conditions of the district.

The quality of preschool education has been improved. The district has paid attention to investing in facilities, supporting boarding costs for children, contributing to improving the quality of health care for children. Especially in the 2023-2024 school year, the district has coordinated with the People's Committee of Gio Linh district to establish a primary school on the island.

The work of relocating people to the island has achieved 100% of the plan approved by the Provincial People's Committee. Up to now, the island district has 25 households with 96 people who have stabilized their lives. Focus on doing well the work of ensuring social security, implementing the movement of "Repaying gratitude" and the army's rear.

Continuing the glorious tradition of 65 years of armed forces of Con Co island district, the locality continues to focus on national defense and military work. Building the district armed forces to be increasingly disciplined and elite, ready to receive and complete tasks well in all situations, not to be passive or surprised.

Organize high-quality exercises at all levels, especially district defense area exercises. Improve the quality of training for self-defense and reserve forces. Invest in the construction of military works, strictly manage defense land and weapons, equipment, and technical means to effectively serve training tasks, improve the combat readiness of the district's armed forces, and meet mission requirements in the new situation.

Political security and social order and safety are maintained stably. Party building work is deployed synchronously and resolutely, clearly affirming the Party's leadership role in all activities of social life. The organizational apparatus of Party, State, Front and socio-political organizations is increasingly streamlined, improving operational efficiency.

In the coming time, Con Co island district will continue to determine the key economic structure as tourism - services, aquaculture development and supporting industries to ensure synchronization in serving the task of economic development of the district associated with strengthening national defense - security, firmly protecting national sovereignty over seas and islands in the new situation.

Strictly and effectively manage the state budget, synchronously implement solutions to mobilize and use quality investment capital to build synchronous infrastructure, meeting the requirements of socio-economic development, tourism and services. Developing tourism and services becomes the driving force to promote the district's economic growth.

Develop agriculture, forestry and fishery in depth, prioritize and encourage the development of models that bring high economic efficiency. Manage, exploit, use and protect resources and the environment effectively and sustainably. Improve the efficiency of production models of typical products of Con Co and promote the image, expand the product consumption market, form retail outlets to supply local specialties...

Strengthen the management, use and promotion of historical sites in the area in conjunction with tourism development; mobilize resources to build, upgrade and embellish a number of spiritual works and cultural institutions. Strengthen national defense, maintain political security and social order and safety in the area.

Focus on leadership and direction to improve the quality and effectiveness of the work of building an increasingly solid island district defense zone. Closely and harmoniously combine national defense and security with economic, cultural and social development. Continue to improve the leadership capacity and fighting strength of the Party organization and Party members.

Strengthening the leadership and innovating the leadership methods of the Party Committee towards the government, the Fatherland Front and socio-political organizations of the district, ensuring that organizations in the political system perform their functions and tasks well.

The Party Committee, government, army and people of Con Co island district are determined to build the island district strong in economy, beautiful in culture, strong in national defense and security, and become an attractive tourist destination for visitors from near and far.
