Changes in Bac Trang resettlement area

A small hamlet, the old resettlement area of the people of village 8, Hoa Ninh commune (Lam Dong) has changed dramatically today. The difficulties of the past have disappeared into the red color of coffee beans, the green color of tea gardens and the faint shadow of durian.

Mr. K'Doi, former Head of the Farmers' Association of Village 8, a good farmer of Hoa Ninh Commune, recalled the days 15 years ago. At that time, his Bac Trang hamlet was still covered with green reeds and reeds. There were no roads, and the electricity project had not yet arrived. "At that time, we were residents of villages in Dinh Trang Hoa Commune (formerly Di Linh District). The land was cramped, the population was dense, there was no land for production, and the residents' lives were very difficult. The State encouraged us to leave the old village and move to this village 8 to make a living. Mr. K'Doi, then Head of Village 4, and his family also left the village, planted trees, built tents, and gardened in the new land. Looking at the wasteland, we were also concerned, but with the State's encouragement, about 60 households volunteered to receive land and move to the resettlement area to have land for production," Mr. K'Doi recalled.

The K'ho farmers, leaving their old villages to move to the resettlement area, started digging up cogon grass roots, building small wooden houses, digging holes in the ground to plant coffee and tea trees. With no water or electricity, they used every drop of stream water to water their coffee plants, looking forward to the day of harvesting ripe fruit. After that, the electricity industry quickly pulled wires and installed electricity for the people, bringing light to every corner of their wooden houses. "It was hard to move to the resettlement area, but when they were given land for production, the people were very happy. Farmers only need land and work hard to make a living," Mr. K'Doi shared.

After years of hardship, with the support of the State and hard-working hands, the former resettlement area now has a new face. There are lush green coffee gardens, long green tea hills and here and there, durian gardens in the process of being built. “Residents in the resettlement area are different now, every house takes care of coffee and tea using new techniques. Scientists like Dr. Pham S used to come to our village, instructing on organic composting techniques and safe coffee care. Currently, the coffee yield of the people is quite high compared to the whole region, reaching an average of 4 - 4.5 tons/ha. We have completely replanted the new coffee variety, which produces large fruits and higher yields than the old variety,” farmer K'Doi proudly said. Now the resettlement area is very crowded with hundreds of houses close together among the green gardens.

“The residents of the old resettlement hamlet, now in village 8, Hoa Ninh commune, are truly a united community, good at production and enthusiastic in building a new rural life,” commented Mr. Cao Trung Ba, a former official of the commune’s Farmers’ Association. Mr. Cao Trung Ba informed that farmers in the hamlet are not only good at doing business but also enthusiastically participating in movements to build village roads and alleys, participating in protecting the “security gong”, helping the whole hamlet to be safe, especially during the red coffee ripening season. “The Farmers’ Association lent the hamlet’s Loan and Savings Group 2.8 billion VND to 49 members. People self-manage, remind each other to use the loan effectively, have not owed any debts or paid late, and are a well-functioning loan group of the association,” commented Mr. Cao Trung Ba.

From the first households who came to the resettlement area, digging up thatched roots to build the first roofs, today, the area has a new look, with electricity - roads - spacious schools and large, beautiful houses being built one after another. The old memories of the difficult resettlement area have blended into today's Bac Trang area, with its beauty built by the hands of farmers.
