Mr. Trump spoke at a campaign rally in South Carolina on February 10.

AFP news agency reported on February 11 that former US President Donald Trump was happy that the bill targeting immigrants at the border with Mexico collapsed, while pledging that he would launch a massive deportation campaign on the first day of his re-election.

The bill's failure to pass the US Senate on February 7 demonstrates Mr. Trump's influence in the Republican Party, as he is determined not to let his potential rival, incumbent President Joe Biden, gain an advantage on the immigration issue.

"Don't forget, we also had another huge victory this week that every conservative should celebrate. We crushed Joe Biden's open borders bill," Trump said while campaigning in South Carolina.

"The whole team did a great job in Congress . We crushed it," he applauded.

Under pressure from Mr Trump, Republican lawmakers appear to be holding off on any border reform until after the November election.

In a vote on February 7, with a 49-50 vote, the Senate failed to pass a $118 billion budget package to tighten immigration regulations as well as aid to Ukraine and Israel.

The deal needs at least 60 votes to pass, while Democrats only hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate.

Mr. Trump has declared that one of his first tasks if re-elected will be to deport illegal immigrants.

"On day one, I will end every open border policy of the Biden administration and we will begin the largest deportation operation in American history. We have no other choice," he said.

The border bill blocked in the Senate also includes aid for Ukraine and Israel. The Senate is now considering a foreign aid package that would completely separate aid from border issues.
