What is a self-propelled gun?
Self-propelled artillery is a type of artillery mounted on a tracked or wheeled vehicle chassis, allowing it to move by itself using these motor vehicles, instead of having to be towed by other vehicles or pulled by human power like traditional artillery.
The biggest advantage of self-propelled artillery is the ability to deploy quickly, have high mobility, allowing it to move to a combat position, then quickly leave this position to avoid counter-fire (the enemy determines the position of the artillery based on the trajectory or thanks to high-tech means to counterattack).

Many people confuse self-propelled artillery with tanks, as both vehicles are equipped with artillery guns on tracked chassis. However, these are two different types of military equipment, designed for separate combat purposes.
Specifically, self-propelled artillery is designed to operate in the rear, providing indirect fire, supporting infantry or other combat units. Self-propelled artillery in particular and artillery in general fire projectiles with curved trajectories, have long ranges and aim at targets beyond direct line of sight.
Meanwhile, tanks are the type of combat vehicles that are directly on the front line, participating in close combat. The guns on tanks have a closer range and are used to fire directly at the target.
For close combat purposes, tanks are also equipped with thick armor, while self-propelled artillery is usually only equipped with armor to protect against infantry fire, bomb fragments... self-propelled artillery armor is not designed for direct combat.
While tanks can rotate their turret to adjust the firing direction, some modern self-propelled guns have turret designs with the ability to rotate, but the turret's mobility cannot compare to that of a tank.
What is special about the self-propelled wheeled artillery designed and manufactured in Vietnam?
At the exhibition "80 years of the journey of Independence - Freedom - Happiness" (from August 28 to September 15), the Military Industry - Telecommunications Group ( Viettel ) introduced for the first time a 152mm self-propelled artillery model, mounted on a wheeled vehicle researched, developed and modernized by Viettel itself.

The 152mm self-propelled gun is a heavy ground artillery line, equipped with a 152mm caliber gun, mounted on an 8x8 military vehicle chassis (8 active wheels), capable of marching at speeds of up to more than 70km/h.
The 152mm gun has a range of 17km for regular ammunition and increases to 24km for extended-range ammunition, with a maximum rate of fire of over 4 rounds/minute, with a crew of 5 to 6 people. The entire self-propelled artillery system weighs 34 tons.

One of the highlights of this self-propelled artillery system is its high level of automation. The vehicle is equipped with a computerized guidance and fire control system, allowing the crew to operate quickly and accurately.
The integrated electronic warfare system, together with modern communication capabilities and intelligent power supply and distribution systems, helps the vehicle operate stably and effectively in all environmental conditions.

In addition, the self-propelled gun is also equipped with a 12.7mm automatic anti-aircraft gun, enhancing close-range defense capabilities against aerial threats or approaching targets.
Laser warning system and smoke grenades help the vehicle actively avoid guided weapons, increasing survival ability on the battlefield. Armor protection meets STANAG 4569 standards, is strong enough to resist small-caliber bullets and artillery shell fragments, providing maximum safety for the combat crew in fierce combat conditions.

The 152mm self-propelled gun is a heavy weapon system, designed to perform indirect fire missions with strong destructive power, wide combat range and high maneuverability. This system can provide long-range fire support for infantry and armor, especially suitable in flexible and high-intensity combat conditions.
Self-research, development and production of heavy self-propelled artillery is considered an important step forward in Vietnam's defense technology autonomy, contributing to protecting the territorial integrity and peace of the Fatherland.
