French President Emmanuel Macron on January 9 chose his close ally, Mr. Gabriel Attal, as the new Prime Minister of the country. Mr. Attal, 34 years old, became the youngest Prime Minister of France ever.
Gabriel Attal's appointment comes after Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, 62, and her cabinet resigned after less than two years in office, as France prepares to host the 2024 Paris Olympics and European Parliament elections this summer. A broader reshuffle is expected this week as President Macron seeks to strengthen his team for the final three years of his term, observers say.
Mr. Gabriel Attal promises to bring a completely different leadership style compared to his predecessor, Borne, the second woman to hold the position of French Prime Minister. While Ms. Borne is highly appreciated for her strictness and straightforwardness, Mr. Attal is the most popular figure in the Government after his time as Minister of Education, a position of political importance.
