(CLO) On Friday (December 13), President Emmanuel Macron appointed Francois Bayrou as the fourth Prime Minister of France in 2024. However, immediately after that, the left-wing opposition threatened to vote no confidence in him.
Leaders of the far-left France Undaunted party said they would seek to remove Mr Bayrou, and Marine Tondelier, leader of the Green Party, said she would support a motion of no confidence if Mr Bayrou ignored the party's concerns about taxes and pensions.
Meanwhile, Jordan Bardella, president of the far-right National Front (RN), said the party would not call for an immediate motion of no confidence, while RN leader Marine Le Pen said Mr Bayrou should listen to the opposition's budget wishes.

Mr Bayrou, 73, is expected to name his ministers in the coming days, but could face the same difficulties as his predecessor Barnier amid a divided French parliament with multiple opposition factions.
The political turmoil in France has raised doubts about whether Mr Macron will complete his second presidential term, which ends in 2027.
There has been no response yet from the conservative Les Republicains party, which supported the previous government, nor from Socialist Party leaders.
Mr Macron hopes Mr Bayrou can stave off no-confidence votes until at least July, when France could hold new parliamentary elections.
Mr Bayrou, founder of the Democratic Movement party, part of Mr Macron's governing coalition since 2017, has run for president himself three times.
Mr. Macron appointed Mr. Bayrou as justice minister in 2017, but he resigned just weeks later amid an investigation into alleged fraud in the hiring of parliamentary aides. Mr. Bayrou was cleared of fraud in 2024.
Mr Bayrou's first real test will come in early 2025 when lawmakers need to pass the 2025 austerity budget. Mr Barnier's previous budget, which aimed to save €60bn, was criticised by the far right and left as too "stingy".
