The NPA's multi-task team focused on mine clearance in the rice fields in Phong Thai ward. |
Accordingly, from August 1, 2025 to now, the team has safely handled 24 explosive materials, including 9 M39 cluster munitions located at a depth of at least 25cm underground. The program focused on clearing an area of more than 100,000m² of agricultural land in Phong Thai ward contaminated with post-war bombs and mines, where 10 related accidents were recorded, injuring 13 people; the most recent of which occurred in November 1998.
The clearance not only contributes to ensuring safety but also helps people use land for production. As of mid-September, the NPA team has cleared 35,200 m² of land, of which more than 35,000 m² of rice fields were processed right after the summer-autumn harvest in early August. The goal is to promptly support people in burning fields, improving the land and preparing for planting the upcoming winter-spring crop.
It is expected that by December 24, 2025, the entire area of land contaminated with mines will be cleared, directly benefiting more than 120 people and indirectly benefiting more than 2,000 people in the area.
The leader of Phong Thai ward said: The mine clearance activities carried out by the multi-task team of the NPA Organization not only ensure the safety of the land but also contribute to stabilizing livelihoods and promoting sustainable development for the local community, which was once heavily affected by the consequences of war.
