Sustainable urban development of Da Nang

In 1945, Da Nang was a small coastal town whose economy was mainly based on agriculture and fishing. By 2025, Da Nang will affirm its position as the leading political, economic, cultural and social center of the Central region. Continuing its 80-year journey, Da Nang is aiming for higher goals, worthy of being a "livable city".

Eighty years ago - in 1945, the people of Da Nang joined the August Revolution, contributing to the historic turning point for national independence. That spirit of patriotism, solidarity, and self-reliance was not only a torch to light the way in the resistance war, but also a strong driving force for the journey of innovation and integration.

Today, in the context of globalization and rapid urbanization, Da Nang is inheriting that revolutionary spirit to aim for sustainable development, becoming a "livable city" of regional stature.

The marks that create "highlights"

Known as the “city of bridges”, Da Nang has made its mark with many works of international stature: Han River Bridge - the first swing bridge in Vietnam, Dragon Bridge that breathes fire and water, or the Golden Bridge on top of Ba Na Hills, which is famous worldwide.

Not only stopping at traffic infrastructure, the city is also leading in planning ecological urban areas such as Hoa Xuan, Nam Hoa Xuan; developing a high-tech park of more than 1,100 hectares - strategic infrastructure to become the center of innovation and high technology in the Central region.

Tourism is also a bright spot, putting Da Nang on the world map as a safe, friendly, and experience-rich destination. The program "Enjoy Danang 2025 - Diverse Experience" is being implemented to diversify products and stimulate domestic and foreign tourism.

These achievements show that the spirit of autonomy and creativity - the core of the August Revolution - has been successfully applied in practice by the city.

Along with the speed of development, Da Nang faces many challenges: traffic congestion; environmental pollution; lack of social housing; climate change; population pressure.

To solve this problem, the city has chosen a smart and sustainable path. Since 2010, Da Nang has built an e-government, and in 2019 officially deployed the smart city model.

The 2018 - 2025 project with 53 priority projects focuses on 3 pillars: Infrastructure; data; smart applications. Thanks to that, Da Nang continuously holds the leading position in the country in digital transformation, receiving the Vietnam Smart City Award for 5 consecutive years.

Along with technology, the city pays special attention to environmental protection. Responding to the campaign “Anti-plastic pollution”, many initiatives have been implemented, such as markets that reduce plastic waste, recycling collection festivals, tree planting, etc.

In 2024 alone, more than 150,000 people participated in environmental protection activities, collecting hundreds of tons of recyclable waste, bringing about both economic and community awareness efficiency.

These efforts affirm that Da Nang does not trade the environment for growth, and is determined to develop sustainably for the quality of life of the people and future generations.

Breakthrough in a new journey

The merger of Quang Nam and Da Nang opens up new development space, with more diverse resources, creating a golden opportunity for breakthroughs.

However, this comes with a series of challenges: Synchronous urban planning; protecting the ecological environment; narrowing the development gap between the center and the periphery; preserving traditional cultural identity.

For sustainable development, Da Nang needs to deploy 3 groups of strategic solutions.

Smart planning, effective governance: Applying the polycentric urban model, modernizing management, building digital government and digital society.

Spearhead economic development associated with specific mechanisms: Focus on tourism, logistics, high-tech industry, high-tech agriculture, supporting industry and cultural industry.

Ensuring social equity and preserving identity: Focus on healthcare, education, and social security in peripheral areas, while creating community spaces to preserve culture and strengthen solidarity.

That is how the city inherits the spirit of "Solidarity - Discipline - Breakthrough - Development", turning challenges into opportunities, building a leading smart and sustainable urban area in the region.

The spirit of the August Revolution is an immortal flame, fostering the will of self-reliance, self-strengthening, and national solidarity. For Da Nang, it is the source of strength for the city to overcome its limits and make a breakthrough in its journey to become an ecological, smart, livable city of Asian stature.

Sustainable urban development is the way Da Nang pays tribute to history and at the same time realizes the aspiration for a prosperous and happy future for the people.
