Which movie will win the 2025 Oscar?

In a year defined by film industry upheaval, social media scandals and political unrest, Hollywood's biggest awards night is shaping up to be a monumental end to a season that's been both glittering and... chaotic.

Just a few weeks ago, Variety , along with much of the film industry, was eyeing six films out of the top 10 for Best Picture. Now, that number has narrowed down to three: Anora , The Brutalist , and Conclave .

Topping the nominations list is Netflix’s crime musical Emilia Pérez , which made history with 13 nominations – the most ever for a non-English-language film. But a once-successful marketing campaign has taken a nosedive, thanks to the resurgence of racist, offensive tweets by lead actress Karla Sofía Gascón. The film’s hopes of winning Best Picture are now all but gone.

Streaming service Netflix had to stick with its best options: supporting actress frontrunner Zoe Saldaña and best original song nominee El Mal . Beyond that, Emilia Pérez risks suffering the same fate as The Turning Point (1977) and The Color Purple (1985) as the most nominated film to go home empty-handed at the Oscars.

The best picture list is a marathon, with a record total length of 24 hours and 45 minutes for the 10 nominees. The longest of the bunch is Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist . Edward Berger’s Vatican drama, Conclave , has middling appeal to older Academy voters and could pull off an Argo -style upset, winning best picture without a best director nomination.

Meanwhile, Anora has had an erratic trajectory, peaking only in the past few weeks after winning at the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and Producers Guild of America (PGA). Over the past decade, winning one of the pre-Oscar screenplay awards, the DGA or PGA, has been a necessary ingredient to securing a Best Picture win. Anora has lost at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Critics Choice Awards.

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony took place on the evening of March 2 (US time) with Conan O'Brien as host.
