Last August, in a study published in the 100th anniversary issue of the Japanese Journal of Botany, scientists announced the discovery of a new plant species in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park. The newly identified plant species belongs to the genus Decaneuropsis, family Asteraceae, with the scientific name Decaneuropsis phongnhakebangensis. The research team agreed to name it Bach Dau Phong Nha - Ke Bang in Vietnamese.
Bach Dau Phong Nha - Ke Bang is a climbing shrub, can be up to 5m high, young branches have brown-yellow hairs, leaves grow alternately in the shape of an inverted egg or oval, flower clusters grow at the tip of branches or leaf axils, corolla is funnel-shaped and dark purple. According to the Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park Management Board, the new plant species was recorded during a survey of plants on limestone mountains from December 5-13, 2024 in many areas in Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, especially in the Hang Va-Nuoc Nut area, at an altitude of 777m.
During this survey, the researchers collected 520 sample numbers of about 250 vascular plant species belonging to 90 families. After analyzing, comparing and processing the data, they confirmed that Bach Dau Phong Nha - Ke Bang is a completely new species, never described in previous scientific documents.
The discovery of new plant species not only enriches the biodiversity list in Vietnam but also affirms the role of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park in preserving rare genetic resources.
