The Australian government said on September 10 that it will introduce a bill to ban children from using social networking platforms this year to limit physical and mental health risks for children.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said: "We want children to have real experiences with real people because we know that social media is having a negative impact on our community." The age verification system for social media will begin testing in the next few months.
The age limit for this ban has not been specified but is expected to be between 14 and 16 years old.
The move comes after Australia's cybersecurity regulator in July asked tech companies to introduce restrictions to prevent children from accessing inappropriate content. If they fail to do so, they will have to comply with a common set of rules imposed by the government.
Many countries are now trying to limit children's use of social media, but legal and technological challenges have made their efforts difficult.
