The Mid-Autumn Festival is approaching but many cake stalls in Hanoi are still quite deserted. Some places have had to launch promotions and discounts to stimulate demand.
According to VTC News, although there are only a few days left until the full moon festival of August, the moon cake market in Hanoi is quite deserted, with few customers at the cake stalls. The reason is said to be that people are tightening their spending and especially Hanoi has just suffered from flooding after storm Bualoi, making the atmosphere even more gloomy.
This year, the retail price of mooncakes of different brands ranges from about 60,000 VND - 100,000 VND/150g piece. For high-end products often used as gifts, the listed price ranges from 2 million VND to 5.8 million VND. These products will be packaged in specially designed boxes, with wine or tea included depending on the product.
However, many stalls have posted signs offering discounts on mooncakes at various levels, some even offering huge discounts down to 100,000 VND for 3 pieces. The sellers claim that this is "company policy" and that the discounted cakes all have an expiration date until November 2025 and are guaranteed to be "not spoiled, moldy, or expired".
Not only roadside cake stalls but also supermarkets and convenience stores such as Winmart, MM Mega Market... are also flooded with promotional programs and discounts on moon cakes.
Specifically, from October 1 to October 6, the Winmart chain offers a 50% discount on many types of mooncakes. Accordingly, the price of 100g mooncakes is reduced from VND55,000 to VND27,500/piece, and a box of 4 mooncakes is reduced from VND220,000 to VND110,000/box. Similarly, the price of 150g mooncakes is reduced from VND75,000 to VND37,500/piece, and a box of 4 mooncakes is only VND150,000 compared to the original price of VND300,000.
At MM Mega Market supermarket, many mooncake designs are also on sale, discounted by about 10 - 15%.
According to many sales staff, this year the consumption of moon cakes is generally very slow. Compared to last year, it is estimated to have decreased by about 30 - 35%.
" Most of them have only been sold in recent days, but before that, from the beginning of September, they didn't sell much, each day the revenue was only a few million. Customers mainly buy popular types, rarely ask for high-end cakes ," said a male salesman on Lac Trung street.
Explaining this situation, a stall manager said that because the mooncake stalls are currently opened too close together, there are 5-6 stalls on a street, leading to a fragmentation of purchasing power, saturation, and making sales even more difficult. In addition, consumers have tightened their spending, limiting non-essential expenses.
" There are stalls that have to sell at low prices before the Mid-Autumn Festival to sell out. We have had to return many cakes that are near their expiration date to the supplier ," this person said.
Looking at the moon cake samples sold along Nguyen Trai Street, Ms. Nguyen Minh Phuong (Thanh Xuan Ward) said that this year the products are not very diverse, mainly the same as every year.
" I want to buy moon cakes as gifts, but the products I want to choose are quite expensive, beyond my budget. The cheaper products have unattractive designs, so I will continue to research further, " said Ms. Phuong.
