GD&TĐ - After the storm, Son Loc Secondary School (Ha Tinh) was littered with rubble, the library was completely lost... The fear of "teaching without classes" due to lack of subject classrooms is even more present.

Devastation after the storm

The rain has stopped and the sun has cleared, but in many classrooms at Son Loc Secondary School (Xuan Loc Commune, Ha Tinh ), rainwater is still dripping onto the floor of the subject room block.

Typhoon Kajiki passed through, causing the entire block of grade 4 subject rooms of the school to be completely damaged. The heavy rain caused the materials to collapse, burying most of the textbooks, reference materials, medical equipment, etc.

The library was also left exposed after the metal roof was blown away by the wind. Books were soaked and scattered under the scattered materials; computers, televisions, printers, bookshelves, tables and chairs were all broken. The damage to this area alone was estimated at 200 million VND.

Not stopping there, the traditional room and the medical room were also devastated: tables, chairs, beds, cabinets, charts, and sand tables were destroyed. Two projectors in the subject classrooms disappeared along with the broken glass doors. Some rooms such as the practice room and the Technology room, the school still cannot check because there is no electricity.

“This building was built in 1999 and has been renovated many times but has never been rebuilt. In 2021, the school mobilized social resources to upgrade the corrugated iron roof, meeting the requirements for recognition in 2022. But after many times of patchwork, now we have to start from scratch,” Mr. Hoang The Anh, the school’s principal, said sadly.

The fierce storm did not spare another row of level 4 houses: Two professional group activity rooms and a teacher’s lounge had their roofs completely blown off. Materials were scattered all over the school yard, glass windows were broken, the roof tiles collapsed… making Son Loc Secondary School a mess as the new school year was approaching.

Immediately after the storm, the local authorities of Xuan Loc commune and the teachers mobilized forces and equipment to urgently clean up. Piles of wet books were spread out across the school yard in the hope of saving some of them. Equipment that was still working was gathered for preservation. Broken glass and rubble were cleared away; dangerous areas were roped off and barricaded to keep students away. Teachers took advantage of the sunny weather to quickly dry any items that could still be used.

On the morning of August 28, taking advantage of the sunny weather, teachers continued to "battle" the weather to dry books and equipment. Ms. Truong Thi Ha - English teacher - said: "My house also had its roof blown off, trees were lying around. Before we could clean up, hearing that the school was heavily damaged, many of my colleagues and I rushed to the school. Looking at the devastated scene, everyone felt a sense of loss, worried about how to make it in time for the new school year. Although the library books were covered in plastic, when the roof collapsed, the materials collided, causing the covering to peel off, water seeped in, and everything was damaged. We were very sorry, just hoping to save a little for the students."

In the midst of difficulties, the spirit of overcoming difficulties of teachers and students still shines. Books are dried page by page, machines are checked to keep usable equipment, classrooms are swept and cleaned. In the school yard, the board of directors also mobilized workers to level and repair damaged areas. Warning signs and barriers are erected to ensure the safety of students going to school.

As planned, on the morning of August 29, the activities of classifying classes and practicing rituals to prepare for the opening ceremony will still take place as planned.

Determined to keep the faith on the opening day

In the 2025-2026 school year, Son Loc Secondary School has 546 students. On the morning of August 28, the school organized a uniform distribution ceremony for 124 sixth grade students, preparing for the school opening ceremony on August 29.

The Technology Room, a lab room, still has water leaking from the ceiling, damaging many of the equipment.

According to the school board, the implementation of teaching after the opening ceremony can still be ensured because the 16 classrooms in the two-story buildings are not affected. However, there is no more space for equipment storage, the library is empty, many desks, chairs, projectors, and learning equipment are lost. Meanwhile, according to the 2018 general education program, subjects such as: Technology, Information Technology, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences all require practice, causing great difficulties for teachers and students.

“With the current conditions, students will have to study mostly by themselves. The Technology Room is not damaged much, but the damaged equipment makes it difficult to organize practice. Some subjects like Math, which used to have 4 periods in the library, are now completely impossible to do,” said Nguyen Thu Hoan, a Technology teacher.

Not only the material damage, the worry lies in the students' circumstances. Many are orphans, many have divorced parents. The school currently has 23 students from poor and near-poor households, 17 students are orphaned, and 5 students are disabled. Losing books and places to study is a huge disadvantage for the students.

Understanding that, at the beginning of the school year, the school called for support and collected 9 new textbooks to give out on the first day of school. However, that plan may have to be postponed because all the books were damaged after the storm. The books have not yet had time to dry so they can be given back to the students.

Previously, at the end of the 2024-2025 school year, the Can Loc Association in Hanoi also supported more than 30 million VND to supplement library books. Now most of these books have also been severely damaged after the storm.

Principal Hoang The Anh choked up: “Books and libraries are the most important things for students here, but now they are gone. It is heartbreaking. But we still try to stay optimistic and work with parents so that students can go to school and not have their studies interrupted.”

In the immediate future, teachers, students and parents of Son Loc Secondary School are making efforts to overcome the consequences and quickly stabilize the situation in time for the opening ceremony. In the future, the school hopes to receive support to rebuild classrooms, add libraries and teaching equipment - and restore the learning environment for students.

Mr. Tran Dinh Viet - Chairman of Xuan Loc Commune People's Committee - said: " Immediately after the storm, the local government mobilized forces to coordinate with the school to check the extent of damage. At the same time, we are completing the submission and report to the Provincial People's Committee to propose a plan to repair the school's facilities, including investing in rebuilding the subject classrooms. In the short term, basic teaching can still be implemented, but in the long term, timely support is needed for the school to ensure teaching conditions, meeting the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program".
